FullON3D ha pubblicato una preview di due motherboard basate sul chipset VIA Apollo Pro266; si tratta dei modelli Shuttle AV32 e Gigabyte 6RX; la prima è dotata di 2 slot per memorie SDR e 2 per memorie DDR, mentre la seconda è dotata di 4 slot DDR, un controller RAID ATA100 e audio on-board Creative. Gigabyte’s 6RX is one fast board, with its DDR SDRAM set to CAS2.5, it manages to outperform Shuttle’s CAS2 DDR AV30 and AV32 in most benchmarks. The ‘performance enhance’ mode of the memory seems to help out quite a bit.

The Shuttle AV32 is a solid solution and shows that, in fact, DDR SDRAM is not as beneficial a solution for the Pentium III because its front side bus bandwidth is limited. At times, the SDRAM equipped AV32 outperforms the DDR equipped AV32. However, Spec Viewperf really shows of the strength of DDR as it is a memory bandwidth hungry set of professional 3D tests. If you are purchasing a system now, solutions such as Shuttle’s AV32 are very wise options because you can purchase SDRAM to use and have a relatively fast board right now while prices are very low and when DDR prices come down, you can easily upgrade to DDR without having to spend money on a new motherboard.
