Unmanned European Shuttle Phoenix Lands Safely By Mattias Karen Associated Press posted: 11:00 am ET 09 May 2004 STOCKHOLM, Sweden (AP) -- An unmanned prototype of a European space shuttle glided safely back to Earth on Saturday after being dropped from nearly 8,000 feet up by a helicopter. Guided by Global Positioning System satellites, the German-designed EADS Phoenix was dropped by a heavy-duty helicopter over Sweden at 9:45 a.m. and ``landed perfectly'' 90 seconds later on a test runway north of Stockholm, a project spokeswoman said. "Everyone here is ecstatic," said Johanna Bergstroem-Roos, of the North European Aerospace Test Range in Kiruna, 770 miles north of Stockholm. "This gives us wind in our sails." The Phoenix shuttle, along with the Ariane 5 rocket, represents the European Space Agency's hope for sending astronauts into space, but project managers concede a full-size version will not be ready until sometime between 2015 and 2020. The test flight was originally planned for Friday but was postponed so technicians could finish analyzing data from an earlier test of the vehicle's onboard computers this week. The next step likely will be to drop the prototype from higher altitudes, with the help of a high-altitude balloon, Bergstroem-Roos said. The finished shuttle must be capable of gliding to land from an altitude of 80 miles, she said. The prototype is just under 23 feet long, weighs 2,640 pounds and has a wingspan of 13 feet. It's one-sixth the size of the actual planned vehicle. Bremen, 5 March 2004 - With the successfully completed taxi tests of PHOENIX, EADS SPACE Transportation achieved another milestone this week: At Lemwerder Airport near Bremen, the prototype of a future space transport system proved its ability to detect and automatically correct track deviations on the ground. The braking system also underwent extensive testing. “We are very satisfied. Testing was successful and we have gained all the results required,” said Peter Kyr, PHOENIX Project Manager, in Bremen after testing had been completed. With PHOENIX, EADS SPACE Transportation wants to prove the feasibility of a re-usable space transport system. The prototype is just under seven metres long, has a weight of 1,200 kilograms and a wingspan of 3.9 metres. Testing in Lemwerder began last Monday (1 March 2004) and was performed in several steps. After reliability of the connection between towing vehicle and PHOENIX was confirmed, taxi tests at speeds between 30 and 150 kilometres per hour at a maximum were carried out. In doing so, PHOENIX was released at a distance of up to five metres from the centreline to see whether the system was able to automatically return to the centreline by applying the necessary track corrections using the nose wheel. Onboard navigation computers calculated the track on the basis of position data provided by the GPS satellite system. The tests were also used to demonstrate the straight-run capability of PHOENIX and to calibrate brake pressure. Under real conditions, the vehicle will touch down at a speed of 255 kilometres per hour. After landing, PHOENIX will reduce speed by first applying the wing flaps and then the disk brakes of the main landing gear to retard to full stop. Thus, brake effect optimisation was one of the goals of the test campaign in Lemwerder. Acceleration of the prototype to about 150 kilometres per hour was the highlight of the taxi tests, which were performed by Rheinmetall Defence Electronics. This speed comes as close to real landing conditions as is possible in a ground test. In this case, too, PHOENIX was able to precisely correct track deviations so that the distance from the centreline was just a few centimetres. The next step will be the flight testing of PHOENIX in Vidsel in Northern Sweden in May 2004. A heavy-duty helicopter will carry PHOENIX to an altitude of 2,400 metres. Then, the vehicle will be released to perform an automatic landing. EADS SPACE Transportation will invest about 8.2 million euros in the development of PHOENIX. In addition to the medium-sized company OHB System AG, Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt and the state of Land Bremen are financially involved with an amount of 7.9 million euros. EADS SPACE Transportation is the European space transportation and orbital infrastructures specialist. Molto interessante, ma per un progetto nuovo come questo io avrei cercato di sperimentare uno shuttle che non abbia bisogno di lanciatori "a perdere", che sono il vero salasso economico di ogni lancio di shuttle. Invece hanno solo "scopiazzato" lo Space Shuttle...

![]() Logicamente la mia analisi per ora può solo fermarsi sulle fotografie, per ora ![]() Resta il fatto che a ogni lancio dello SS, bisogna spendere una MAREA di soldi! L'immenso serbatoio del propellente e i 2 motori per il distacco vanno completamente persi ogni volta (immagina i soldi), senza contare il tempo e i $$$$ per l'assemblaggio e il posizionamento sulla rampa di lancio. Imho sarebbe stato molto meglio cercare di tirare fuori un veicolo per quanto più possibile "autonomo", che sia in grado di decollare da una comune pista per aeromobili. La cosa non è sicuramente semplice ma per un progetto completamente nuovo era la strada da affrontare secondo me, in caso di successo sarebbe stato un notevole balzo in avanti in confronto allo SS, rendendo lo SS ancora più obsoleto di quello che già è con notevoli vantaggi per l'ESA. Invece a occhio [vedo che il PHoenix usa un rientro planante, quindi ipotizzo (e c'è anche scritto nell'articolo) l'uso dell'Ariane per il lancio perchè onboard non ha motori di potenza sufficiente per il lancio] hanno mantenuto gli stessi limiti dello SS. Invece in questo modo nel 2020 avremo (almeno da parte Europea, chissà l'oriente, potenza aerospaziale in espansione, cosa ci riserverà...) una navetta che ha gli stessi ENORMI costi di gestione dello SS. E questo più che un passo avanti è un passo indietro. ![]()
