controlla se è gia presente l'accellerazione con il comando glxinfo | grep rendering, se ti risponde yes come credo è gia abilitata

Il mio notebook ha proprio il 945, però è bastato specificare "Intel" come scheda video e mi sono trovato il Direct render attivo.
Ho fatto meno fatica che con un qualsiasi driver ati o nvidia.

ArchLinux, però non dovresti avere problemi particolari nemmeno con debian, ubuntu o altre.

L'ho usato
Scherzi a parte, sono entrato in /etc/X11/xorg.conf ed ho cambiato il driver della scheda video da vesa a i810

che note hai precisamente?

si con questo pacchetto è possibile settare la risoluzione a 1280...pero il 3d continua a latitare

Infatti mi risulta che il supporto 3d sia stato sviluppato dalla stessa Intel, e che sia incluso nel kernel da un bel po'.

Senti fai una bella cosa: posta il contenuto del file /var/log/Xorg.0.log (non ho capito che distro usi, il percorso è per Ubuntu e spero sia los tesso per te)così vediamo l'errore che non fa abilitare il direct rendering

Magari per dare una occhiata al volo basta anche un cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log | grep EE
