The graphics powerhouse, NVIDIA, launched Sunday its first foray into the mobile market with the "GeForce2 Go" GPU. Based on the GeForce2MX, NVIDIA promises that this chip will bring mobile 3D perfomance from an inadequate 15% of the power of the desktop MX to an impressive 85%. We played Quake III and ran several GeForce2 demos on a pre-production Toshiba laptop. Performance was impressive and was at desktop levels. This laptop, which should be available in the spring, was running a PIII of undisclosed speed and had 16MB of local frame buffer.

GeForce-based video cards, while top performers, have the reputation as pigs where power is concerned, so we were very curious what kind of claims NVIDIA was making in this area for its new mobile chip. Although the GeForce2 Go sipped slightly more power than the Rage Mobility 128, NVIDIA claims that because of integrated T&L that CPU power consumption decreases by up to 2W under heavy load, more than making up for the chip's 0.5W disadvantage to its ATI rival under such conditions.
