Tali cpu adottano un core a 0,18Micron e cache L2 on-die rispetto ai vecchi Pentium III Katmai, e permettono perciò un maggiore margine teorico di overclocking, specialmente i modelli che utilizzano FSB a 100Mhz. The Pentium III is one of the strongest overclocking CPU lines on the market. Many of its available speed grades can be overclocked quite significantly with relative ease. The best news is that because Intel has been manufacturing these chips for almost 2 years, the quality of the chips across the board is fairly good. This means that the chances of getting a good overclocking CPU candidate are fairly high, though there are still 'lemons' to be had.

If you're interested in getting a CPU guaranteed of overclocking well, several online merchants sell chips which have been tested to certain levels (Outside Loop is one such example). These merchants do charge a premium price for these chips, but the chips also come with a warranty of at least a year - guaranteeing operation at the overclocked frequency. For some, this is a better solution than gambling and purchasing a random retail or OEM Pentium III.
