StorageReview ha pubblicato la press release con cui Seagate annuncia la sua nuova gamma di Hard Disk USCSI160 Barracuda 36ES, con meccanica a 7200rpm e capacità sino a 36Gb:

SCOTTS VALLEY, CA, October 30, 2000 - Enterprise storage leader Seagate Technology (NYSE:SEG) today announced its new Barracuda 36ES, an 18 and 36 Gbyte full-featured SCSI disc drive optimized for entry servers and high-performance personal computers. The new Barracuda 36ES is highly leveraged from Seagate's industry-proven Barracuda ATA, but features a high-speed Ultra160 SCSI interface. In today's entry-level server and high-performance personal computer markets, initial cost is often the most important purchase criterion. The Barracuda 36ES lets users affordably implement the more scalable, higher-performing, and backward compatible Ultra160 SCSI interface to new systems, or provides an easy upgrade and expansion path for existing SCSI systems. The Barracuda 36ES delivers the added performance and flexibility that comes with being a true world-class server SCSI disc drive at a competitive entry-level price.

According to IDC, customer demand for entry-level servers is strong and is expected to remain strong. "IDC expects the entry server market to post the strongest growth opportunity as Intel-based systems begin to make greater headway in attracting more mission-critical workloads," said Steve Josselyn, research director at International Data Corporation. "The Barracuda 36ES is ideal for small to mid-sized businesses requiring the expandability and performance provided by the SCSI interface, while delivering entry-level prices for these often cost-sensitive businesses," said Brian Dexheimer, executive vice president, Worldwide Sales, Marketing and Customer Service at Seagate Technology. "SCSI's multi-drive performance assures a competitive edge in server applications requiring quick response times and its scalability provides a painless way to add additional drives to your system as your storage requirements grow."

Barracuda 36ES - Proven Quality and Performance Leadership The Barracuda 36ES is part of Seagate's acclaimed Barracuda family, now in its seventh generation of products that have successfully continued to meet the needs of entry-servers and high-end desktops. As the pioneer of 7,200 RPM SCSI technology, and with the know-how that comes from shipping over 25 million Barracuda drives, Seagate can now provide world-class entry-level server performance at a more cost-effective price.

Barracuda 36ES - A Range of Applications The Barracuda 36ES is ideal for a number of markets and applications. Besides being a clear choice for the entry-level server market, the Barracuda 36ES is also well suited for bandwidth-intensive applications conducted on workstations such as personal video, CAD/CAM, and multimedia. For the growing Network Attached Storage (NAS) market, where performance and low cost are key for customers looking for LAN-less backup solutions, the Barracuda 36ES is ideal.

Barracuda 36ES - The Details The Barracuda 36ES is available in the Ultra160 SCSI interface with bus data rates of 160 Mbytes per second. It is also available with the single-ended narrow and wide SCSI interface solutions for those legacy systems needing additional storage resources. Its average seek times of 8.5 milliseconds, low acoustic levels of 3.4 decibels, and full-featured SCSI performance show that the Barracuda 36ES is designed for entry-level server performance. With a Mean Time Between Failure (MTBF) rating of 800,000 hours, three-year warranty and non-op shock rating of 350 Gs, the Barracuda 36ES sets the standard for entry-level server reliability.

The Barracuda 36ES is available in both 18.4 Gbyte and 36.9 Gbyte capacities. Single-unit Suggested Retail Price (SRP) is $319 and $519 respectively. Actual street prices will vary, and will be determined by Seagate authorized resellers. The Barracuda 36ES will be in volume production by the end of the year.

The Seagate Advantage - 3D Defense System Drive Defense includes Seagate's G-Force Protection system and SeaShell. G-Force protection is a system approach to designing major drive components - motor, heads, head-arm, clamp, and discs - to be less susceptible to shock events. Additionally, all Seagate drives are shipped in the new SeaShell. SeaShell is a shock-ribbed, transparent enclosure that limits a drive's exposure to Electro-Static-Discharge (ESD) and also protects against external shocks and stress. Tested by major OEMs, SeaShell reduces the force of a 12-inch drop by a factor of 10 over standard ESD packaging.

Data Defense features ensure maximum data integrity, making it possible to avoid data loss while running system applications. Data Defense includes Seagate's exclusive Advanced Multidrive System (SAMS), Error Correction Code (ECC), Safe Sparing and End-to-End Data Path Protection.

Diagnostic Defense - includes SeaTools, Web-Based Tools, and Drive Self Test utilities that analyze system events in order to assist the user to diagnose or predict potential malfunctions.
