Chipset Micron Samurai DDR

Many have heard of DDR memory. It is to revolutionize computing by offering twice the bandwidth of current SDRAM solutions. While people have been discussing DDR for several months, most are still puzzled that no current motherboards support it. Intel has already positioned itself with the Rambus memory architecture and has shown little interest in DDR memory types. DDR capable chipsets must be developed by other manufacturers, such as VIA, SIS, and ALI. Until recently, VIA was positioned to take the lead as the first company to produce a DDR chipset, but things have changed. In December 1999, Micron took the lead with its new DDR Samurai chipset. It proved that DDR was something besides fiction, and has laid the way for future DDR implementations.

One of the more unusual options offered by Samurai DDR technology is support for multiple chipsets on one motherboard. By offering this option, system manufacturers can more effectively utilize operating space. Several users could use just one system, each with their own dedicated devices and memory space. Most important is the ability to spread tasks across multiple CPUs. All user operations are spread across the CPU network so that each task is more effectively handled. For multiple user SMP configurations, multiple chipsets may prove to be the most scaleable architecture available.
