Case Studies della Prodrive: Ford Team Mondeo When Ford approached Prodrive towards the end of the 1998 season of the British Touring Car Championship, they were looking for a partner that could once again bring success to the company in a series it last dominated in the early 1990s with the Ford Sierra Cosworth. With little time to prepare for the forthcoming season, we spent the winter and beginning of the 1999 season developing the chassis on the Ford Mondeo. The engine for the programme was supplied by Cosworth. In 1999 Ford Team Mondeo was up against some very competitive teams and the early races saw the team fighting for the minor places. However, as we got the time to improve the chassis and aerodynamic package, the car rapidly became more competitive moving up the grid until by the end of the season it secured its first BTCC win. By the end of 1999, the Mondeo’s chassis was working well, however there were problems with numerous gearbox failures and we believed a lack of outright power from the Cosworth engine. Ford agreed to give us the engine development programme and over the winter we redesigned the two-litre V6 unit changing the majority of the components. The result was an engine with significantly better power delivery and one which no longer caused the gearbox to fail. This new combination of engine and chassis saw the Ford Mondeo take the 2000 season by storm, clinching a memorable 1-2-3 in the first race at Brands Hatch and going on to clinch the manufacturers’ title by mid-season. The team went on to take 1-2-3 in the drivers’ title and bring Ford the BTCC title for the first time in nearly a decade. Subaru case study Subaru is renowned for making some of the world’s best performing cars. While its blue and yellow rally cars have become icons of the world of rallying. But little more than a decade ago, it was a very different story. Until the mid eighties Subaru predominantly manufactured mini passenger cars and light commercial vehicles with more than 70 per cent of sales in the domestic market. If Subaru was to compete with the global giants, like Toyota and Ford, then it knew it would have to find a unique proposition. Subaru’s innovative engineering approach – using flat four boxer engines and all wheel drive would provide this distinctive positioning. Rallying was seen as the ideal showcase for such technology and not having the necessary expertise the company turned to Prodrive in 1989, who was at that time running the BMW rallying programme. Prodrive set about turning the Legacy into a competitive rally car and in its first two seasons in1991 and 1992 brought Colin McRae successive British Rally Championship titles, and then Richard Burns his first BRC in 1993. Subaru competed in the World Rally Championship and Asia Pacific Championship in1993 before the now infamous Impreza fronted Subaru’s campaign in 1994. It won six rounds of the Championship giving Subaru second place in both the drivers’ and manufacturers’ championships. In 1995, Subaru went one better winning both titles and so began a legend on the rally stages of the world. Since then, Subaru has won two further manufacturers’ and one more drivers’ title for Richard Buns in 2001. But while Subaru was working with Prodrive to make the Impreza a success on the stage it was also working behind the scenes to help turn competition success into commercial success in car sales. In the early 1990s, while the car industry was generally seeing declining sales, Subaru’s went from strength to strength with increasing sales in overseas markets and for higher value cars such as the Subaru Impreza Turbo. Prodrive played its part with unique UK models such as the McRae series and the cult RB5. In addition, Prodrive has built a worldwide business with Subaru providing high performance components to enhance its cars. The ultimate iteration came in 2000 when Subaru UK launched the Impreza P1, the first fully type approved 280ps Impreza. Most recently in 2002, working directly with Subaru in Japan, it developed the Impreza STi Prodrive Style for sale throughout the world. Subaru is arguably one of the best examples of how motorsport has redefined a brand and brought tangible commercial benefits to a manufacturer. It also clearly shows how Prodrive works with vehicle manufacturers to create cars that consumers want. srt usa case study In 2001, the turbo-charged Subaru Impreza WRX hit the showroom for the first time in North America. Having already proven the marketing value of the Subaru brand globally through the World Rally Championship, it was clear that participation in the national SCCA ProRally Championship could do the same for the new Impreza WRX in North America. Working with Subaru of America, Prodrive established Subaru Rally Team USA, running two Impreza WRXs in the Open and Group N classes. The team swept the board in the 2001 Championship in only its first year, taking the manufacturers’ and drivers’ honours in both classes. BAR case study BAR F1 is one of the youngest Formula One teams. It first raced in 1999, with the aim to be a real challenger to the domination of McLaren, Ferrari and Williams. Despite some of the best facilities in the championship, and the talent of former world champion, Jaques Villeneuve, success eluded the team. In December 2001, Prodrive was brought in to manage the team. Under the leadership of Prodrive Chairman and BAR Team Principal, David Richards, the team is embarking on a five-year plan to take the Formula One crown. ferrari case study 2001 saw Prodrive move into sports car racing for the first time, using the Ferrari 550 Maranello as its base. The initial aim was to develop a GT car able to challenge the dominance of the Chrysler Vipers and the Porsche GT2s. From a clean sheet of paper, the company’s race team designed, built and ran the Ferrari in just 15 weeks. In only its second race, the Ferrari 550 GT Maranello took pole position and went on to win, giving the Italian marque its first victory for a front-engined car in more than three decades. Just two races later it repeated the feat, proving Prodrive’s racing credentials and drawing interest in the car from all corners of the globe. |
