And we are extremely angry over the outrageous behavior of Britain’s Prime Minister Gordon Brown who invoked anti-terrorism legislation to freeze the assets of Icelandic banks in the UK when the British government had been assured by our government that depositors of Icelandic banks in the UK would be paid. Many believe this led to the downfall of Kaupthing Bank, the last of our three largest commercial banks to remain standing after the others were nationalized, like the last tree in the hurricane.

We have always considered Britain to be one of our closest allies and friends.

Poi comunque il riscaldamento funziona (e non si paga) e fuori ci sono ancora 6 gradi, e io ho la fortuna di possedere una bicicletta e una mantellina da pioggia.

Comunque, a fine ottobre torno a Roma.

Gia' il riscaldamento.
Alcuni miei colleghi Britannici mi hanno raccontanto che nella grande crisi petrolifera degli anni 70 per un certo periodo i riscaldamenti d'inverno sono rimasti spenti tutti, e si andava a lavorare solo 3 giorni alla settimana per risparmiare sul caburante negli spostamenti.
Speriamo siano periodi che non rivivremo, soprattutto in Islanda.

Ho fatto due anni di post-dottorato, parlato a tre conferenze e assistito a un'altra mezza dozzina, sottoposto a riviste e conferenze otto lavori di cui cinque pubblicati e un sesto accettato e in attesa di pubblicazione, e assistito gli studenti di un corso di teoria della computabilità.

Direi che per ora può bastare, e si torna a casa.

Iceland Registers Complaint about Britain to NATO

Icelandic authorities have filed a complaint with NATO because of Britain’s action to invoke anti-terrorism legislation in an effort to freeze the assets of Icelandic banks in the UK. The formal complaint was submitted at the meeting of the NATO Council yesterday.

Iceland’s Prime Minister Geir H. Haarde said at the Althingi parliament yesterday that it would have been “unthinkable” that Britain had treated a larger nation in such a way.

According to Morgunbladid’s sources, Iceland’s permanent representative at NATO, Thorsteinn Ingólfsson, cited public safety in Iceland in a broad context at the meeting, including an economical context, and said that Iceland was being threatened under the current circumstances, among other things because of one-sided actions taken by one NATO member state, Britain.

Icelandic authorities claim British authorities abused their anti-terrorism legislation, which is at odds with the joint fight of NATO member states against terrorism and does in fact jeopardize the credibility of that fight.

The NATO Council’s meeting was closed and only attended by the permanent representatives of the member states and the NATO Secretary General, but not by other officials. That kind of arrangement is unusual and only takes place when very serious matters are discussed.

After the meeting, NATO Secretary General Jaap de Hoop Scheffer called Iceland’s Prime Minister Geir H. Haarde and they discussed the matter. Haarde also discussed the matter with President of the European Commission José Manual Barroso.

Barroso said at a press conference yesterday that the European Union could not be involved in a debate between Iceland and Britain.

According to historian Gudni Th. Jóhannesson, Iceland has not complained to NATO about the actions of another NATO member state since the Cod Wars against Britain, 1975-1976, when Iceland fought for extending its fishing limits to 200 nautical miles.

Iceland’s Kaupthing Prepares Lawsuit against Britain

Representatives of Iceland’s largest bank, Kaupthing, are preparing a lawsuit against British authorities because of the harsh measures the UK took last week—seizing Kaupthing’s assets in the UK—which, Kaupthing claims, drove the bank into bankruptcy.

Kaupthing Bank will demand ISK 100 billion (USD 1.0 billion, EUR 0.7 billion, GBP 0.5 billion) in compensation, RÚV reports.

A group of lawyers from an international law firm are currently in Iceland working with Kaupthing Bank’s representatives to prepare the bank’s case against the British authorities. One of these lawyers is John Jarvis, a highly-respected lawyer in the UK.

“I think it’s safe to say we have formed some initial views. We are surprised that the order that was made, was made pursuant to an act which is commonly known now as the Northern Rock Act 2008,” Jarvis said in an interview with RÚV.

“It seems to be, to us at the moment, outside the purpose of that act that the order was made and there is a possible remedy there for a gain to the English court to have that order declared unlawful,” Jarvis continued.

“We are also looking to see whether there are the civil remedies for damages for such torts under English law as misfeasance in public office and negligence,” Jarvis concluded.

The team of lawyers is hopeful that Kaupthing Bank can win the case. “One can see from the use of the anti-terrorist legislation by the British government against Landsbanki that there was a degree of desperation in their actions last week,” said lawyer Richard Beresford.

“And certainly the language of the British government in relation to Icelandic banks was unfortunate and perhaps betrayed something underneath which was more than one would have thought should be proper behavior by the British government towards one of the major financial institutes in the UK,” Beresford added.

Iceland Preparing Lawsuit against Britain

Iceland’s Prime Minister Geir H. Haarde said at the Althingi parliament yesterday that the government had recruited a British law firm to look into the legal position of Iceland and prepare a lawsuit against British authorities because of the damage caused to the Icelandic state with the downfall of Kaupthing Bank.

“The behavior displayed by the British government, unsubstantiated misrepresentation of the bankruptcy of the nation, caused enormous damage to a number of companies and had nothing to do with saving British interests,” Haarde said, according to ruv.is.

Steingrímur J. Sigfússon, leader of the Left-Greens, the largest opposition party, said it is important to investigate what had caused the collapse of the Icelandic banking system and identify who is responsible for it. He called on wealthy Icelanders to relocate their assets to Iceland and assist in reconstructing the economy.

Leaders of all opposition parties criticized the conduct of British officials. Leader of the Progressive Party Gudni Ágústsson went as far as to ask whether Iceland should consider terminating diplomatic relations with Britain as Iceland did during the Cod Wars.

Iceland’s largest bank Kaupthing was nationalized last week following public announcements by British officials that Iceland did not intend to honor its obligations to British account holders, which led to the seizure of Kaupthing’s assets in the UK and subsequently the bank’s collapse, as claimed by Sigurdur Einarsson, Kaupthing’s chairman.

Icelanders Shunned by Danish Companies

Although most Icelanders abroad are not treated any differently because of the financial crisis, some Icelanders in Denmark have been faced with prejudice because of their nationality; a phone company recently refused to serve an Icelandic woman.

“The clerk asked me where I was from and I showed him my Icelandic driving license. He made a phone call and then he told me that he was unable to prepare an invoice for me because they couldn’t be certain that I would pay,” the woman in question, Adalheidur Lilja Úlfarsdóttir, explained to Morgunbladid.

Úlfarsdóttir, who has lived in Denmark for more than six years, had wanted to buy WiFi for her laptop. As it turned out, the phone company she had wanted to purchase the WiFi from had established a special rule on not serving Icelanders.

“I asked if I should show him my Danish pay checks,” Úlfarsdóttir said. “Then I just said goodbye and that I would go to some other company.”

At the next phone company Úlfarsdóttir had no problems with getting the service she needed. “When I asked if they had a special rule for Icelanders the clerk just looked at me as though I was plain silly.”

Úlfarsdóttir did not want to name the company which refused to serve her but she said that she is certainly going to change phone companies. She has a full-time job in Copenhagen, she said, and her ability to pay her bills should not be questioned.

Úlfarsdóttir said she had recently read a similar story in Morgunbladid, about two Icelandic women who were shown out of a purse store on Stroeget, Copenhagen’s main shopping street, only because they were Icelandic.

“I thought it was unbelievable that such a thing could happen. And then the same thing happens to me. This is ridiculous,” Úlfarsdóttir concluded.

Demonstrations and Flag-Burning in Iceland

Two demonstrations were organized in Reykjavík on Saturday in protest of the economic crisis and lack of actions. In the latter, which began on Austurvöllur square at 4 pm, protestors burned flags marked Landsbanki Bank.

The flag-burning protests were organized by activist and television presenter Kolfinna Baldvinsdóttir with the goal of “breaking the silence of officials and walking for democracy,” visir.is reports.

The demonstrators marched from Austurvöllur to Rádherrabústadurinn on Tjarnargata, an historic building which used to be the residence of the prime minister, where the flag-burning took place.

There, former Foreign Minister Jón Baldvin Hannibalsson and activist Ómar Ragnarsson, among others, addressed the crowd.

The other demonstration, which began at Austurvöllur at 3 pm, was organized by musician Hördur Torfason. Among those who spoke during the protests were author Einar Már Gudmundsson.

Protests were also organized in Akureyri and Seydisfjördur, in north and east Iceland.

The demonstrations caught worldwide attention. Norwegian newspaper Aftensposten reported that 2,000 Icelanders had demanded that both the country’s prime minister and the chairman of the Central Bank board of directors step down and that Iceland apply for EU membership as soon as possible.

Se Reykiavik concede ai russi una cosa del genere è la volta buona che il Pentagono fa come a Panama , stiamo parlando di scardinare il bastione che sorregge la difesa navale NATO nel Mar del Nord, mica brostoline.....
