AMD's new 7 series of chipsets is just around the corner and it is expected to bring a new level of performance to the K8 architecture, but most of all full support and (hopefully) some interesting features for the coming AM2+/K10 processors. The higher end of this series will contain the RD780, RD790 and RX780 chipsets and they will all have their individual target buyers. Our Chilean friends at ChileHardware have stumbled upon something very interesting feature when investigating the BIOS of these new chipsets; the AMD AutoXpress feature(s).

This feature will allow for acceleration of the performance of K10 processors, automatic overclocking of the PCIe bus when using graphics cards based on R580+ or newer (such as the R6XX), accelerating data transfers in between graphics card when running CrossFire, and even allow the HyperTransport bus to be double-pumped when using a HT 1.0 processor, through a feature called XpressRoute. [Editor's note: Not all K10 processors are HT 3.0]

There will also be a MemBoost feature that can be used with high-end memory (DDR2-800 and up) for lower latencies when using a K8 processor.

A little more than a year after the introduction AMD Torrenza co-processor initiative materialized in real products that are set to be commercially available shortly from now, Advanced Micro Devices announced last week. The claim should demonstrate that the plan to enable third-parties to innovate AMD’s server platform is beginning to pay off.

Currently Hewlett Packard, Activ Financial Systems and RapidMind are either offer or readying co-processor solutions under the Torrenza initiative. Besides, AMD itself also offers its so-called AMD Stream Processor product, which is based on ATI Radeon X1900 graphics processing unit, but is meant for high-performance computing, but not gaming. Unfortunately for AMD, the adoption of both Stream Processor and Torrenza seems to be slow.

Activ Financial Systems has been selling its ActivFeed MPU (market data processing unit), a hardware accelerated solution for low-latency exchange feed processing, for many months and says its customers are positive about the FPGA-based (field programmable graphics array) hardware co-processor for AMD64 second-generation servers.

Select next-generation HP ProLiant Servers with the quad-core AMD Opteron processor will support HTX cards, enabling end users to deploy customized acceleration solutions within their current or future data center infrastructure, HP recently announced.

RapidMind is developing programming tools that lets software organizations leverage multi-core processors with minimal impact on their development costs and timelines. The resulting applications can “harness the full potential of the latest multi-core processors from AMD, seamlessly taking advantage of acceleration technology available with Torrenza solutions,” the company said, adding that custom-made co-processors may speed up computing of certain data by 30 times.

“As computing demands exponentially grow, the keys to success are new models of increased computational performance that simultaneously alleviate cross-industry pain points like power consumption and infrastructure complexity. AMD is dedicated to enabling these cutting-edge performance models by arming Torrenza partners with a superior processor architecture and stable platform that is the basis for accelerated computing advancement,” said Randy Allen, corporate vice president, server and workstation division, AMD.

AMD presenterà insieme ai processori desktop con architettura K10 anche i chipset RD780, RD790 e RX780. Le nuove soluzioni che equipaggeranno le proposte dei vari produttori integreranno diverse nuove tecnologie, tra cui una funzionalità chiamata AMD AutoXpress. Il sito ChileHardware è andato a fondo, svelandoci alcuni interessanti dettagli.

AutoXpress permetterà l'accelerazione delle prestazioni attraverso l'overclock automatico del bus PCIe in presenza di una scheda video con core R580+ o superiore. Inoltre, in configurazione CrossFire, il trasferimento dei dati tra le due schede verrà accelerato.

XpressRoute permetterà al bus HyperTransport di raddoppiare il suo bandwidth in presenza di un processore HT 1.0.

Ci sarà inoltre una funzionalità MemBoost che potrà essere utilizzata con le memorie di fascia alta (DDR2-800 e superiori) per abbassare le latenze durante l'uso di un processore con architettura K8.

Rispondo anche qui che secondo me è una notizia in linea con la nuova strategia di mercato di AMD: la creazione di nuove fasce di mercato dove il concorrente non è o non può essere presente.

Vedi X3,vedi questo che può essere definito come il processore x gli smanettoni squattrinati :P

dico la mia: il 5000+ sbloccato potrebbe essere una notizia divulgata per creare rumors e far incavolare gli utenti che si aspettavano qulcosa di più....e poi FLASH esce qualche bestia di scheda video e tutti strasorpresi........
sarebbe una mossa magnifica! cmq quel che mi fa pensare è il serpentone, il fatto che i colori siano quelli della ati, che il sito dove alloggia sta notizia sia quello della ati! bho! speriamo. cmq scusatemi siamo un po OT ciau

io capisco che in attesa dei nuovi phenom, amd presenti le ultime versioni degli x2 con funzioni particolari..è un tipo di marketing che è sempre stato fatto da qualunque ditta..ma la cosa che + mi infastidisce è che si ostini a non presentare sul mercato le schede madri con i nuovi chipset..
Queste schede sono pronte ormai da mesi..a questo punto probabilmente usciranno insieme ai k10 con l'sb600 e quindi 15 giorni dopo le nuove versioni con southbridge aggiornato..tutto questo ovviamente non mi sembra molto sensato..
Forse inoltre le è sfuggito che c'è moltissima gente che aspettava quasi + le nuove mobo che i phenom, in quanto quest'ultimi avranno volumi adeguati sul mercato solamente nei primi mesi del 2008..
Se avesse presentato questi nuovi prodotti, molti utenti (me compreso) avrebbero montato temporaneamente un x2, rimpinguandole le casse a tutto favore dei loro bilanci..è questo che non concepisco proprio fra tutte le scelte di marketing di amd, in quanto non presenta sul mercato un prodotto finito, disponibile, valido e compatibile con i prodotti già presenti..

Io aspetto ancora fiducioso... ma non so per quanto, ho sempre avuto amd e ati, e mi sono sempre trovato bene... dai con ste mobo...
