windows vista sp1...qualcuno l ha provato?

Come già accaduto per Windows XP SP3, il terzo atteso service pack per XP, il sito blog Hotfix.net ha pubblicato online una lista non ufficiale di più di 100 hotfix, che a suo avviso saranno incluse nel prossimo Windows Vista Service Pack 1 (SP1), il primo major update del nuovo sistema client. Microsoft smentisce e critica immediatamente l'iniziativa e l'utilità di questa fantomatica "Vista SP1 Preview" non-ufficiale. Ethan Allen, amministratore di The Hotfix, ha reso disponibile un sito web dedicato http://www.vistasp1.net da cui è possibile accedere e consultare tutte le patch software che Microsoft includerà eventualmente nel prossimo pacchetto SP1 di Vista, atteso al rilascio nella seconda metà del 2007. Secondo Allen, SP1 includerà aggiornamenti di compatibilità per driver e software, tra cui il supporto per un numero maggiore di dispositivi third-party USB e Firewire, e molti prodotti di Sony. Secondo Allen Vista SP1 includerà anche correzioni per migliorare il TV playback e le altre funzionalità Media Center del sistema, e per le funzioni di power management. Altri dettagli su questa iniziativa di Hotfix.net sono stati pubblicati da PC World in un articolo dedicato. Come già successo con la preview non ufficiale di XP SP3, Microsoft ha immediatamente rilasciato un commento negativo sull'iniziativa tramite il blog del Vista Team. Nick White, Vista Product Manager, scrive: "HotFix.net ha pubblicato oggi una collezione di hotfix singoli per Windows Vista come una presunta preview di Windows Vista SP1. Tuttavia coloro che hanno seguito da vicino le discussioni su Vista noteranno che si tratta di materiale già disponibile su Windows Update, di alcune hotfix rilasciate su base case-by-case, e di speculazioni su ciò che potrebbe e non potrebbe far parte di SP1. Sembra che il blogger abbia compilato una lista di precedenti riferimenti a SP1 (puramente congetturali, e già discussi in altri blog) corredata da un'altra lista di 'hotfix' menzionate in vari articoli Knowledge Base (di nuovo, già pubblicate). Creiamo e rilasciamo hotfix regolarmente per scenari customer molto specifici o per macchine OEM-shipped, ed è la politica standard che tutti gli hotfix vengano inclusi nella successiva release service pack. Tuttavia un service pack non è solo un compilation di hotfix e aggiornamenti di protezione, quindi non fate l'errore di pensare che il set di fix offerti in questa particolare lista rappresenti un preview del service pack. Vale la pena ricordar che gli hotfix non pubblicati su Windows Update non sono destinati all'installazione individuale a meno che l'utente non sia interessato dagli specifici sintomi menzionati nell'articolo corrispondente KB. Questi hotfix rappresentano correzioni specifiche per scenari customer specifici e normalmente non sono stati sottoposti ad un full regression testing. Quando vengono integrati in un futuro service pack, questi fix sono sottoposti a beta testing e testing completi in cerca di regressioni. Quindi installare un collezione di hotfix non necessari potrebbe causare più problemi di quelli che effettivamente si risolvono.". Abbiamo già parlato in varie news precedenti di Vista SP1. Secondo una e-mail spedita ai tester TAP: "Windows Vista Service Pack 1 (SP1) sarà un service pack classico che includerà tutti gli aggiornamenti di protezione e gli hotfix, oltre ad altre modifiche limitate a miglioramento della qualità del prodotto". Ricordiamo inoltre che Vista SP1 introdurrà una nuova API di sicurezza "aperta" per Windows. Questa iniziativa deriva dalle dure critiche ricevute da vari esponenti del settore della sicurezza riguardo la tecnologia di protezione del kernel "PatchGuard" e mira sopratutto a sciogliere le preoccupazioni dell'Unione Europea, da tempo messa in guardia sulla problematica. Vari security vendor, capeggiati da Symantec e McAfee, hanno criticato duramente l'integrazione della tecnologia nel sistema, lamentandosi pubblicamente per la decisione di Microsoft di "blindare" il kernel di Vista (x64). Questo approccio infatti impedirebbe anche ai vendor di sicurezza third party di implementare le proprie soluzioni di protezione, come Tamper Protection, Behavior Blocking e HIPS (che necessitano di accesso al kernel), "soffocandoli" sul mercato della sicurezza, un settore in cui il colosso si è lanciato di recente. A fine Dicembre Microsoft ha rilasciato già una prima bozza delle interfacce di programmazione (API) che permetteranno ai security vendor third-party di "aggirare" la controversa tecnologia di protezione del kernel.
