Compaq Presario 700 "MORTO"

This will help us to provide a better Hewlett-Packard web experience in the future. Provide feedback How can we improve this document to meet your needs? Though a personal response will not be provided, we value your comments. HP is continually striving to improve the usefulness of the information provided on the site. Content starts here Description This document describes the situation where on an initial startup or boot, the notebook stops responding at a black screen with a blinking cursor; however, after removing the battery and peripherals to troubleshoot the PC, the computer begins to work properly. Rather than accept this as a intermittant problem, it is recommended that you determine what caused the initial failure and take corrective action. Solution One of the first steps taken when troubleshooting the PC was to remove the battery. Removing the battery power caused the system to reset to the default BIOS values. Reinstalling the peripherals without determining the cause of the problem will result in intermittant failures. Use the following methods to reassemble and test the components . Method 1: Reinstall Battery If the PC boots properly when connected to the AC power source, reinstall and check the battery as follows: 1. If the PC is running, perform a normal shutdown. 2. Reinstall the battery and allow the battery to fully recharge. 3. When the battery is fully charged, disconnect the AC adapter. 4. Press the Power button to turn on the PC. * If the PC fails to boot, the battery is probably defective and should be replaced. See XXX for ordering HP replacement parts. * If the PC boots properly, the battery is working properly. Please perform Method 2 to troubleshoot boot problems with the peripherals. NOTE: If the startup or boot problems reoccur later, perform Method 4 to install the updated BIOS. Method 2: Reinstall the Peripheral Devices If the PC boots properly after reinstalling the battery, reinstall and check the peripheral as follows. You can install all the peripherals at the same time and then reboot the PC, but if the PC fails to boot, you will have disconnect all the peripherals and then reinstall and test them one at a time. 1. With the PC turned on and operating, install the peripherals one device at a time. Allow time for the operating system to recognize the peripheral and display a message that it is locating the proper drivers 2. If any peripheral displays a message to search for updated drivers, follow the instructions to access the manufacture's website and download / install the recommended updates. 3. After the peripheral is installed and operating, turn off the PC using the Windows shutdown procedure. 4. Press the Power button to turn on the PC to verify the startup or boot procedure. 5. Repeat the previous steps to install the other peripheral devices. * If the PC boots properly, the conflict is probably resolved. NOTE: If the startup or boot problems reoccur later, perform Method 4 to install the updated BIOS. * If the PC fails to boot, perform one or more of the actions in Method 3 to resolve startup or boot conflicts. Method 3: Resolve Startup or Boot Conflicts After determining that the peripherals operate properly, use one or more of the following to resolve startup conflicts. 1. Disconnect peripheral devices with known problems before booting the PC. After the PC is operating, connect the peripheral. For instance, the IPod and certain other music devices can be set to act as a hard disk. If the IPod device is connected at boot time, the PC tries to find the Windows operating system on the IPod. By disconnecting the IPod, the PC can boot properly. 2. Switch the boot order so USB devices are below the hard drive. See HP Notebook PCs - Configuring the Boot Order in the System BIOS for information on changing the BIOS settings on boot order. 3. Download and install updated drivers for the peripherals. Also, search the peripheral websites for support documents on known conflicts. Method 4: Install the Updated BIOS HP provides updates to the PC BIOS for known system level problems. See HP and Compaq PCs - Updating the BIOS NOTE: If none of the above options correct the problem, please contact HP to schedule a repair. Using a Certified HP Service Center to Repair a Notebook PC.
