Well, actually...no. I'm impressed by seeing things I've never seen before, sometimes because of new technology, sometimes art or design. While some good games have come out lately, I haven't seen anything really new.
Here's what has *really* impressed me lately...
- The NV20. It's going to change everything. No more fixed-function pipeline...developers now have control over every pixel and every vertex.
- The Xbox. Microsoft has done an amazing job of putting all the resources together and making the right technical and business decisions. Most importantly, they recognized that getting it right on the first attempt was essential, and are doing so.
- Mac OS X. It's the first major innovation in user interfaces in 6 years (since Windows 95), and it could be the first serious *consumer* competition for Windows in as many years. Most importantly, Apple has returned to its true roots of innovation -- not innovatively colored computer cases, but genuinely innovative software. If Microsoft screws consumers over with Whistler / Windows XP as the press reports would seem to indicate (no, guys, I will NOT pay an annual subscription fee to rent your OS, and I will NOT submit to this mandatory registration crap), and Apple is smart and ditches the dying PowerPC platform to partner with AMD or Intel, then all the rules could change!
