KYRO Review

VooDoo Extreme ha pubblicato la propria recensione dell'interessante chip grafico KYRO 3D, trattando anche una breve parte tecnica riguardante la "tile based rendering architecture"; la trovate a questo indirizzo
If Tile based rendering is so great, why doesn't everyone use it? The reasons aren't that clear. First of all, there is a lot of complexity in sorting the scenes, especially with really complex ones. I don't know how Kyro 3D performs its sorting, but I find it hard to believe there is no performance hit when the scene becomes increasingly complex. Perhaps silicon becomes too complex to implement tile based rendering and quad pipelines/200MHz clocks like found in the GeForce 2 GTS. 250Mpixels/sec effective fill-rate is pathetic, and unless there is some issues with tile based rendering, there is no excuse for not making the parts raw fill-rate faster. If NVIDIA can do 1600Mtexels/sec and 3dfx ~700mtex/sec, why can't STMicroelectronics come even remotely close? Also, some special effects aren't possible (or are difficult) to do with tile based architectures, like any effect involving a Z-buffer read/write or a Z-buffer clear in the middle of a scene. There are some hacks built into the Kyro which allow this to be done, but not efficiently.
