The GeForce2 Ultra offers blazing performance, but there's a price to be paid for owning the fastest 3D graphics card on the market. With an estimated retail price of $499 (64MB), it's extremely expensive. However, when looking at the latest processors from AMD and Intel, you see that they also command a premium price.

To put this in perspective, how often is it that you experience a 30-50% increase in 3D graphics performance by upgrading to a faster processor? Add in the cost of possibly having to purchase a motherboard and memory, and well, you should see where I'm headed with this. Take a GeForce2 Ultra and throw it in a mid-range Pentium 3 that has a TNT or TNT2, and your system will be whistlin' Dixie.

One scenario for getting a graphics card based on the GeForce2 GTS would be as part of a major system upgrade or the purchase of a new system. In these cases, costs can be offset by not paying premium prices for other components such as a top of the line processor or the largest hard drive.
