. Long mode doesn't support real mode or virtual 8086 execution, but incorporates two sub-modes: compatibility and 64-bit. Compatibility mode allows execution of existing 32-bit and 16-bit code under a 64-bit operating system without recompilation. 64-bit mode introduces AMD's new architectural features, including:

64-bit addressing
8 Additional GPRs (for a total of 16)
GPR width increased to 64-bits
8 128-bit SSE registers
64-bit instruction pointer and relative addressing
Flat address space (code, data, stack)

My first reaction was, "Wow. Only eight more GPRs!" It seems the major change touted in the press release is the support for 64-bit addressing, increasing the 4 GB per process address limit imposed by current 32-bit implementations. Also interesting is the addition of SSE, which if I am interpreting the text correctly, is only supported under 64-bit mode.
