Ace's Hardware ha riportato alcuni dati riguardanti il consumo energetico delle cpu Cyrix III; secondo tali dati il consumo sarebbe leggermente troppo alto per un impiego ottimale nei notebook, a causa dell'eccessiva dissipazione di calore richiesta. Considerando le prestazioni piuttosto basse di tali cpu per un impiego nei PC di fascia media e alta, si tratta di un duro colpo per le possibilità di successo delle nuove cpu VIA/Cyrix; maggiori informazioni a questo indirizzo

The 667MHz CPU is consuming 9.W under normal circumstances and 16.1W under max circumstances. The closest Celeron I can find is the 700Mhz mobile which consumes 15W under max, the P3 also consumes 15W under max and 8.6W under SpeedStep (550MHz).

The 800Mhz Cyrix III consumes 11.5W under normal and 19.3W under max condition, where the P3 mobile consumes 10W and 18W respectively.

Intel average figures are much lower, with numbers reaching 4-6W. Intel only quotes max numbers in their roadmaps, not average numbers. Recently when they launched the mobile 850Mhz, they stated the average was 2-3W. This is MUCH lower than Cyrix III.

Also the databook mentions the need for proper airflow, and the only way to have proper airflow in a notebook is a fan (unless you want to blow on it yourself), with a fanless design and a heatsink of 1/4" (normal for notebooks) the temperature of the CPU would be (using worst case 16.1W for the 667MHz).
