Icelanders Shunned by Danish Companies

Although most Icelanders abroad are not treated any differently because of the financial crisis, some Icelanders in Denmark have been faced with prejudice because of their nationality; a phone company recently refused to serve an Icelandic woman.

“The clerk asked me where I was from and I showed him my Icelandic driving license. He made a phone call and then he told me that he was unable to prepare an invoice for me because they couldn’t be certain that I would pay,” the woman in question, Adalheidur Lilja Úlfarsdóttir, explained to Morgunbladid.

Secondo me semplicemente quel nome li' non riuscivano a farcelo entrare nel database delle fatture...

Finora me la cavo, grazie.

Poi comunque il riscaldamento funziona (e non si paga) e fuori ci sono ancora 6 gradi, e io ho la fortuna di possedere una bicicletta e una mantellina da pioggia.

Comunque, a fine ottobre torno a Roma.
(Era previsto, in due anni non mi sono abituato al buio dell'inverno islandese.)

Articolo vecchio di due settimane e mezza, per fortuna nel frattempo un accordo tra Islanda e Olanda c'è stato.

E in realtà, più che del primo ministro Geir Hilmar Haarde, la colpa della crisi ricade sul presidente della banca centrale islandese (ed ex primo ministro) Davíð Oddsson e alla sua politica economica quantomeno sconsiderata, oltre che sui venti-trenta uomini più ricchi d'Islanda (amici di Davíð) che avevano trasferito i loro capitali all'estero e che alle prime avvisaglie di burrasca hanno fatto fagotto e sono scappati.

Gia' il riscaldamento.
Alcuni miei colleghi Britannici mi hanno raccontanto che nella grande crisi petrolifera degli anni 70 per un certo periodo i riscaldamenti d'inverno sono rimasti spenti tutti, e si andava a lavorare solo 3 giorni alla settimana per risparmiare sul caburante negli spostamenti.
Speriamo siano periodi che non rivivremo, soprattutto in Islanda.

Beh, il riscaldamento in Islanda è tutto geotermico, quindi con o senza petrolio il rischio di stare al freddo non lo corrono

Al massimo, come a febbraio scorso, chiudono le piscine pubbliche per mandare tutta l'acqua calda alle case.

A me sa di bluff.
O cercano di attirare altri capitali, o cercano di convincere chi ha un conto da loro a tenerlo lì.

Oppure, stanno cercando di compensare l'inflazione prevista per il prossimo anno, che è del 16%.

The Crisis Metaphor

Metaphors play a big role in day-to-day speech. We use them without even thinking about them and almost every human act is warped up in verbal metaphors. When those day-to-day metaphors are analyzed they reveal much about speaker; his point of view, status and even agenda. Case in point: the current economic meltdown.

The most common way of referring to the Icelandic state metaphorically is to call it the thjódarskúta (“the ship of the nation”). The image of the nation as a ship developed in the second half of the 20th century and is obviously linked to the country’s main export, fish, and the country’s legend of seamanship. The welfare of tjódarskúta is based on two things: The forces of nature, which play a big role in the Icelandic national identity, and the captain.

If we look closely at the concept of referring to the nation as a ship, one sees that the ship cannot be disconnected from the uncontrollable forces of nature, and no matter how qualified the captain is, storms can always appear. But a good captain can make sure that the waves do not crush his boat and a good captain can always sail his ship to a safe harbor.

In the current economic crisis, the leaders in charge have been keen on referring to the thjódarskúta and how it is important to steer the thjódarskúta to a safe haven. This usage of metaphor suits the government’s agenda well. It does not undermine their authority and it emphasizes how the latest crisis is more like an unforeseeable storm rather than something that could have been predicted.

But the media and the public have stopped using the thjódarskúta metaphor and have come up with a new one. The latest trend is to refer to the situation as a big hangover from a huge party. Headlines like “The Party Is Over” are common in both the Icelandic and the foreign media, which provides a slighter different perspective than the poor thjódarskúta which is sailing through rough waters.

The Icelandic nation is definitely suffering from a hangover right now. Interest rates of loans are increasing, the króna has crashed, inflation is growing, unemployment rising... Of course this gives you headache.

But the thing is, most of us weren’t invited to the party that we suddenly have a hangover from. The party metaphor is cruel, and it hits where it hurts. It suggests that a group of elites have thrown a party so big and got so drunk that they managed to ruin the economy of an entire nation. They did not invite us to the party, but they are sharing their hangover with us.

It is therefore no wonder that the government and other officials, i.e. like the board of the Central Bank, hang on to the thjódarskúta metaphor in interviews, articles and statements. But the public has its own way of referring to the crisis and it suggests that the crisis is solely man-made and any links to unpredictable forces of nature is rubbish.

And what do you do when you have hangovers from a party you didn’t even attend? If I am to continue to use the metaphor lingo, I’d suggest that the least thing that the big bank owners and the government can do is to provide us with some aspirin, a glass of water and stop messing with us. Nothing is more dangerous than a grumpy, hungover nation.
