Can Aviation Contribute to a Better Environment?


A crescendo of controversy about aviation’s increasing contribution to air pollution and global warming is forcing an international debate and the first attempts to implement limits on air transport’s environmental impact. Due to its glamorous image and its essential role in international mobility, air transport has managed, for the most part, to stay off the sustainability radar screen. Improvements in technology are expected to be wiped out by the growth in air traffic. As aviation is facing pressure from the world community to be accountable for its disproportionate contribution to global climate change and its environmentally unsustainable trends, this conference will focus on short term solutions and long term visions toward the concept of sustainable aviation. It will also focus on an immediate contribution of aviation in improving the current understanding of atmospheric environmental problems and its potential to provide world wide reliable data while educating the international community on the issues of air quality and cleaner fuels.
