Impossibile inizializzare il DirectInput.. aiuto!!

salve a tutti! spero questa sia la sezione giusta per il mio problema.
quando provo ad avviare un gioco mi da un errore e non parte: "Impossibile inizializzare il DirectInput" (in inglese: "Could not initialise DirectInput").
inoltre ho notato che in DXDIAG nella sezione Input mi dice: "Sono stati rilevati dei problemi nel Registro di sistema. Per ulteriori dettagli, vedere il file di testo salvato". nel file c'è il seguente errore(vi riporto il paragrafo dove viene riscontrato il problema):

il sistema operativo è Windows XP 32bit con Service Pack 3. ho appena reinstallato le ultime Direct X 9 e i driver della scheda video ma niente, il problema resta... qualcuno può aiutarmi??
