Modding, what is it really?

This isn't really an article, more of something to think about. Things that I observe, questions that I would like answered.

Taking a look around the modding community you can see lots of things, the major thing you can see is that modding is becoming more and more mainstream.

Is this a good thing? There are 2 TV shows that I know of that are dedicated to modding, but it still is not fully mainstream yet.

Some consider it an art form, some consider it a hobby and some say 'What's modding?'

Browsing all the forums I see lots and lots of mods, some are great and some are not so great. I see many people modding their computers with some theme in mind, some pull it off well and others do not.

There are many levels of modders out there, some are considered 'professional' but are they? What makes them a professional? Being in a magazine? Being contracted by a company for a mod? Winning an award? Charging $40 an hour to do a mod? What exactly makes them a professional?

What is modding really? Modding used to be taking a beige box and personalizing it. Now we see sculptures with a computer in them, which take months, even years to finish sometimes. Is this really a 'computer mod'? Can this really be called a computer mod?

Wouldn't that wonderful sculpture, artwork, still be just as amazing without the computer in it?

The computer has become nonexistent in today's mods, it is in the background, and some mods don't even have to have a computer in them, do they?

Technically I can take Michelangelo's David statue and stick a motherboard in it and call it a computer mod, right?

What exactly makes a mod a mod?

When did modding go from taking that beige square or rectangular box and making something much more interesting and eye appealing, to getting rid of the box altogether?

The whole purpose of modding was to create something wonderful and creative out of something that was bland and plain.

When did modding become, 'Whoever has the most money wins?'

Modding has become commercialized, it's a shame really. It was once a pure art, that you put your heart and soul into, along with all of your creative talents.

When did sending something out to be made become a mod? I understand that not everyone has the talents to do modding, but at least try it first, rather than contracting it out to someone else and claiming it as your own.

When did designing something and sending it out to be fabricated become a mod?

One of the things that I used to love about modding was that it was not perfect, it was personal. Mods used to show the creative side of the modder, not the range of tools he can use or that he owns. Whatever happened to being creative? Now, someone can pay someone to make them a 'custom mod', but is it really custom? Sure it is one of a kind, but not the owners truly, someone else created it. In today's world where computers are such a big part of everything, it was nice to see something that was not so perfect. Perfection only comes from machines. Sure, you can argue that a man created that machine to do that job perfectly, but it is pointless.

Where are we going now with modding? Where to next? At this point there are probably millions of mods floating around the world, and quite a bit of it is copying from someone else to suit there own needs.

How many original mods are out there? Most of the mods out there are some theme of something someone else created.

Where is the modding community headed? We all know that many companies out there saw that the beige box was just not going to do anymore, so they came up with pre-mods. Some of them are good, some of them are not.

What's next for modding? What is the next level of modding? What does the future hold for it? Why even mod anymore, when you can get a pre-mod?

Modding has already moved 'out of the box', to a point that you can't distinguish a computer from a piece of art. Where else can modding go now? Is there anywhere for it to go now that it is on TV? TV is the largest sellout of them all.

There comes a point in time where you have to go back to your roots, and look deeper to find a truth.

The roots of modding are personalization and creativity, not money and greed.

The roots of modding are those beige boxes that now sit in landfills somewhere because of the pre-mods.

The true modders out there do it because they enjoy it, because they enjoy creating things that appeal to themselves, and not the general public.

Modding has become a major competition of who can out do who, and who has the most money to buy the best parts or pay the most to someone to make them a mod.

What happened to doing it because you enjoy it? What happened to doing it yourself?

Years ago when modding was not 'commercialized, and bastardized' it was a true art form, but I guess in our technologically centered civilization it was bound to become commercialized, after all it was or is, (the line blurred somewhere), centered around computers.

I am still waiting for the day that some company pays a modder to let them mass produce one of his mods, I'm sure it has already happened and we just don't know it yet, or we do and I missed it.

Modding has become a major industry, making money for lots of companies, it has become commercialized. Why? Because we let it, because in our laziness to create something, we would rather buy it than create it.

What happened to true modding? Is there such a thing? Modding is really just an improvement of an existing thing right? Taking that plain beige box that someone else created and improving upon its design, is where it all started. Modding is slang for modifications, but is it truly a mod if you don't modify something?

Think about it, a mod is a modification, modifying that beige box into something else, but what if you build something around the computer, is it still a mod? If you build something from scratch and put a computer in it, can it still be considered a mod in the true sense of the word?

Is a computer mod a computer mod if there is no computer in it?

Nowadays I see people modding most anything, cell phones, toasters, microwaves, cars etc. What's next?

If a tree falls in the forest, and no one is around to hear it, does it still make a sound?

A parte rarissimi casi di *novità* (e un paio li abbiamo anche qui) mi sto accorgendo che quasi tutte le cose che vedo sanno di "già visto", e sono d'accordo con l'autore dell'articolo quando sostanzialmente taglia le gambe ai mod "a tema", nella parte che ho evidenziato in grassetto.

ma ki è ke si fa fare i mod pagando qualcuno? ma dai, non è possibile...
cmq. a me piacciono i mod creati dal nulla, tipo una ruota o una cafettiera, sono punti di vista ma a me piace.
poi se per lui modding è solo modificare una cosa mbo... forse la parola come tutto il resto col tempo si è evoluto ed è giusto seguirla, o magari all'inizio del modding la gente non aveva i mezzi, le capacità o le idee per alcuni mod ke invece oggi vengono fatti.
cmq. sti caxxi :P troppe pippe mentali, l'unica cosa su cui sono veramente daccordo è ke c'è gente ke la prende troppo seriamente pensando ke sia una gara a ki ce l'ha più grosso e non un hoby o un passatempo per coltivare una propria passione.

E' la voglia di reinterpretare un'idea che altri hanno visto in un modo diverso...
