Questa mattina è sorto questo problema....
La settimana scorsa ho installato i driver ATI (ho una sapphire 9200 SE). Per qualche giorno tutto ok, poi oggi in fase di avvio, subito dopo il menu di grub mi compare questa scritta .
Il monitor resta nero per tutta la fase di avvio finchè non arriva al login
Che devo fare?

Prima di installare i driver ATI ho fatto una copia dell'XF86Config-4. Posso ripristinarlo e tentare di riconfigurare i driver ATI?

Ops...hai ragione, ho dimenticato alcune cose...
Ho una debian sid, fresca di installazione. Per i driver ATI ho seguito questo 3d:

Il problema è sorto all'improvviso, da un giorno all'altro senza che io abbia modificato nulla nella configurazione.

la linea di comando riesci a visualizzarla? (passa come parametro al boot 'single').
In ogni caso salvati il tuo xorg.conf e poi ripristina quello vecchio e vedi se cambia qualcosa... in ogni caso potrebbe essere stato un qualche aggiornamento. Avevi mica fatto un dist-upgrade prima?

Inoltre io dico: se non hai fatto nulla ed e' stato solo cosi' improvviso... non sara' mica il tuo monitor che e' morto(almeno a quella risoluzione/frequenza) ?

Se ti riferisci alla linea di comando di grub si, riesco a visualizzarla. Il monitor funziona perfettamente. Riesco ad entrare nel bios ed anche la fase di avvio di windows xp viene visualizzata. Prima di spegnerlo (quando ancora funzionava) ho lanciato un dist-upgrade ed ho installato questi aggiornamenti:

Oggi ho provato a ripristinare il vecchio XF86Config-4, ma non è cambiato nulla. Ho provato anche a reinstallare sid, stessa cosa! Cosa devo fare? Buttare il monitor? o la scheda video?
Eppure sotto windows non sembra dare problemi. Un problema simile ce l'ho cercando di entrare nel bios..

Aggiungo altre info.
Il problema del bios (cioè l'immagine disturbata come quella di una tv mal sintonizzata) si è verificato solo 3/4 volte da quando ho questo pc, cioè circa 2 anni.
Oltre a questo problema, ogni volta che accendo il pc (anche prima di installare linux) tutte le scritte che compaiono durante la fase di boot, non sono nitide (sono sempre disturbate), ma questo succede solo finchè la scheda video (o il monitor) non si "scalda".
Tutti questi problemi, non ce l'avevo prima di cambiare il pc. Prima avevo una matrox g400 ed il monitor andava una meraviglia..
Può essere la scheda video?

Non so se è stato il dist upgrade, però le cose che dici della scheda video non mi piacciono molto.
Non puoi installare un'altra scheda video?
Se riesci a loggarti lancia da un runlevel senza grafica "sax2 -r" se sono i driver Ati almeno riconfiguri la grafica e il monitor come se fossero da "zero".

No, non riesco a loggarmi..se provo ad aprire un terminale lo schermo rimane nero con la scritta OUT OF RANGE..
Domani porto il mio monitor in ufficio e lo provo su un altro pc con debian (anche se è sarge non dovrebbe cambiare nulla). Se va bene, sicuramente è la scheda video

Ho appena provato il monitor con il mio vecchio pc che ho qui in ufficio. Nessun problema, a parte quello delle scritte che, a monitor freddo, appaiono "mosse" (in un post precedente avevo detto che non lo faceva, ma ricordavo male ).
Conclusione, è la scheda video?

Correzione...Alla sono riuscito a far andare il monitor con il pc che ho in ufficio. Ho fatto diverse prove, ma nessun problema
Ho provato anche casa, ma proprio non ne vuole sapere. Cercherò di procurarmi un'altra scheda video.

Ieri ho installato una nuova scheda video nvidia; ho staccato il masterizzatore dvd installato poco prima di installare sid; ho staccato l'hd master (quello con windows) e provato a fare il boot da cd.. Insomma, ho provato di tutto, ma NULLA
Per caso, poi, ho provato a fare il boot lanciano il comando

e l'installazione è partita!
Mi spiegate a cosa serve questo parametro?

out of range lascerebbe intendere una risoluzione non supportata. forse si riferiva a quella della console che con "linux26 vga=771" hai corretto.

Forse sono stato poco chiaro nei miei post. A me la modalità grafica parte, funziona tutto perfettamente. L'unico problema ce l'ho in fase di boot (o in fase di installazione) prima che venga avviato gdm e quindi gnome. Non so se è corretto quello che dico, ma non mi funziona la console, per il resto tutto ok!
Questo problema è sorto da un giorno all'altro. Non posso neppure dire se la colpa è dei driver ATI in quanto per alcuni giorni la console ha funzionato
