1) SETI@Home http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/
Is a scientific experiment that uses Internet-connected computers in the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence (SETI). You can participate by running a free program that downloads and analyzes radio telescope data.

2) Einstein@Home http://einstein.phys.uwm.edu/
Is a program that uses your computer's idle time to search for spinning neutron stars (also called pulsars) using data from the LIGO and GEO gravitational wave detectors. Einstein@home is a World Year of Physics 2005 project supported by the American Physical Society (APS) and by a number of international organizations.

3) Climate Prediction http://www.climateprediction.net
Is to investigate the approximations that have to be made in state-of-the-art climate models (read more about this). By running the model thousands of times (a 'large ensemble') we hope to find out how the model responds to slight tweaks to these approximations - slight enough to not make the approximations any less realistic. This will allow us to improve our understanding of how sensitive our models are to small changes and also to things like changes in carbon dioxide and the sulphur cycle. This will allow us to explore how climate may change in the next century under a wide range of different scenarios. In the past estimates of climate change have had to be made using one or, at best, a very small ensemble (tens rather than thousands!) of model runs. By using your computers, we will be able to improve our understanding of, and confidence in, climate change predictions more than would ever be possible using the supercomputers currently available to scientists.

4) Protein Predictor@Home http://predictor.scripps.edu/
Is a world-community experiment and effort to use distributed world-wide-web volunteer resources to assemble a supercomputer able to predict protein structure from protein sequence. Our work is aimed at testing and evaluating new algorithms and methods of protein structure prediction. We recently performed such tests in the context of the Sixth Biannual CASP (Critical Assessment of Techniques for Protein Structure Prediction) experiment, and now need to continue this development and testing with applications to real biological targets. Our goal is to utilize these approaches together with the immense computer power that can be harnessed through the internet and volunteers all over the world (you!) to address critical biomedical questions of protein-related diseases.

5) LHC@Home http://lhcathome.cern.ch/
The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) is a particle accelerator which is being built at CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, the world's largest particle physics laboratory. When it will switch on in 2007, it will be the most powerful instrument ever built to investigate on particles proprieties. The LHC@Home project produces results that are essential for verifying the long term stability of the high energy particles in the LHC.

6) Rosetta@home
Rosetta@home needs your help to determine the 3-dimensional shapes of proteins in research that may ultimately lead to finding cures for some major human diseases. By running the Rosetta program on your computer while you don't need it you will help us speed up and extend our research in ways we couldn't possibly attempt without your help. You will also be helping our efforts at designing new proteins to fight diseases such as HIV, Malaria, Cancer, and Alzheimer's.

Our work is built on the belief that technological innovation combined with visionary scientific research and large-scale volunteerism can change our world for the better. Io maggiormente scaccolo su Rosetta e SETI ma forse ne aggiungo un terzo di riserva per i periodi di down in maniera non non sprecare tempo CPU

Ma adesso il PC@home è morto (vedi altro post) ,
il PC@work è praticamente fermo

With this in mind...
... one can imagine the great importance that knowledge about molecular structure inheres, and also the usefulness of the ability to make accurate predictions about molecular reactivity.

Quantum Theory
- in principle allows us to predict the structure and reactivity of all molecules, but the equations of Quantum Theory become intractable complex with increasing system size. Exact analytical solutions are only possible for the smallest systems and for almost all molecules of interest in chemistry and life sciences no such solutions are known to us.

Quantum Chemistry
- is the science that invents smart approximations to Quantum Theory to predict molecular information with high accuracy. Nevertheless the solving of even approximated quantum chemical equations for real life systems require huge amounts of computing power.

Quantum Monte Carlo (QMC)
- is a very promising method new to Quantum Chemistry. One of the major advantages of QMC is the ability to perform massively parallel calculations, which can be utilized to broaden the horizon of calculable systems by distributing the work over hundreds or even thousands of processors.

Quantum Monte Carlo At Home (QMC@HOME)
- is a project designed to further develop the Quantum Monte Carlo method for general use in Quantum Chemistry. With the help of volunteers all over the world we want to raise the computing power that is needed to test and further develop the opportunities of the promising new approach of Quantum Monte Carlo.
