Ambientato nell'anno di Ford 632, il romanzo descrive una società il cui motto è "Comunità, Identità, Stabilità". A seguito di una devastante guerra di nove anni (iniziata negli anni '40), l'intero pianeta viene riunito in un unico Stato, governato da dieci "Coordinatori Mondiali". La storia è proibita e solo i coordinatori sanno come la presente società sia nata e come fosse prima.
La nuova società è basata sui principi della produzione in serie - applicati inizialmente nelle industrie automobilistiche di Ford alla produzione del "modello T" - per questo Ford è il dio questa società ed il segno della "T" ha rimpiazzato il segno della croce cristiana. Dal disprezzo di Henry Ford per la storia discende anche il rifiuto di studiarla e comprenderla. La produzione in serie viene applicata anche alla riproduzione umana. Gli embrioni umani vengono prodotti e fatti sviluppare in apposite fabbriche secondo quote prestabilite e pianificate dai coordinatori e non esistono più vincoli familiari di ogni tipo ("ognuno appartiene a tutti").Gli esseri umani in questa società sono divisi in caste, ottenute tramite un ritardo controllato dello sviluppo degli embrioni, avvelenati per via chimica o per privazione dell'ossigeno, in modo da influenzarne il futuro sviluppo fisico e intellettivo. Gli esseri umani delle tre caste inferiori sono prodotti per clonazione. La casta alfa consiste degli individui destinati al comando, i beta coprono incarichi amministrativi che richiedono un'istruzione superiore, ma senza le responsabilità del comando. Le tre caste inferiori sono le gamma, delta e epsilon in grado decrescente di intelligenza. Gli epsilon sono descritti come "semi-deficienti" e sono creati e addestrati per occuparsi dei lavori più umili senza lamentarsene. In genere, tutti gli individui sono creati e condizionati per conformarsi al ruolo che ricopriranno nella società. Ogni individuo indossa un'uniforme, del colore distintivo della propria casta.
Il condizionamento psico-fisico inizia sin dal concepimento e viene poi proseguito durante l'infanzia attraverso la ripetizione ipnopedica continua di slogan; ogni individuo viene indottrinato ad amare la propria collocazione sociale, il colore della propria uniforme, la vita cui sarà destinato per la casta cui appartiene. Ogni eventuale infelicità viene eliminata attraverso la somministrazione del soma, una droga euforizzante e antidepressiva. Sotto molti aspetti la società del Mondo Nuovo può essere considerata utopica e ideale: l'umanità è finalmente libera da preoccupazioni, sana, tecnologicamente avanzata, priva di povertà e guerra, permanentemente felice. L'ironia tuttavia è che questa condizione ideale è ottenuta sacrificandole le cose che generalmente consideriamo importanti per l'essere umano: la famiglia, l'amore, la diversità culturale, l'arte, la religione, la letteratura e la filosofia. Contrariamente a quanto un lettore contemporaneo può attendersi, tra le tecnologie usate per il controllo della società non rientra l'ingegneria genetica. Questo perché Huxley scrisse il testo vent'anni prima che James Watson e Francis Crick scoprissero la struttura del DNA. I cittadini del Mondo Nuovo non hanno alcuna nozione della storia passata, salvo sapere, per il condizionamento avuto, che nel passato sono successe cose orribili e che oggi è il migliore dei mondi possibili. Sanno che gli esseri umani in passato erano vivipari e che esistevano nascite e genitori, ma questi concetti sono un tabù, le parole "madre" e "padre" sono usate come insulti.
Mentre nella prima parte del romanzo viene descritto il Mondo Nuovo, nella seconda si scopre che per ragioni economiche una regione del pianeta non è stata civilizzata come le altre. In un'area localizzata nel Nuovo Messico sopravvive in una riserva rigidamente controllata una sacca di società pre-moderna, mantenuta per ragioni di studio sociale e di turismo a beneficio degli abitanti del resto del mondo. Qui si incontra il personaggio di John, figlio di due cittadini del Mondo Nuovo - risultato di un errore di contraccezione - partorito nella riserva, dove la madre si è smarrita ed è stata dimenticata durante un viaggio. John cresce nella riserva secondo lo stile di vita degli Zuni (un popolo di indiani d'America) e educato secondo una cultura e una religione ibride tra quella Zuni e quella cristiana latinoamericana. La madre gli insegna a leggere e lui rimane molto influenzato dai lavori di Shakespeare, raccolti in un volume finito chissà come nella riserva e scampato alla distruzione dei libri operata secoli addietro nel Mondo Nuovo. Scoperti da due Alfa in vacanza nella riserva, John e la Madre tornano nel Mondo nuovo, dove la madre comincia ad assumere Soma fino alla morte, e il figlio, ribellandosi alla società nel quale si trova, prova a fuggire in un faro, dove comincia a vivere in solitudine. Trovato però dagli abitanti del mondo nuovo, nella disperazione per la sua incapacità di evitare di unirsi alla loro pazzia si uccide.

The History is forbidden and only the 10 coordinators knows how present society is born and how was earlier.
The new society is based on the assembly line production, initially applied in Ford’s “Model T”, and Ford is the God of this society and the “T” symbol has replaced the Christian cross. From Ford’s reject of society is derived the refusal to study and understand it. The assembly line production is applied also for human reproduction. Human embryos are produced and developed in appropriate factories and the production quota is decided by coordinators; family relation aren’t allowed (“everyone belong to everyone”). Human beings are divided in social classes, obtained in different ways of embryos development to control their future physical and psychical development . The 3 lower classes are reproduced by cloned. The “Alfa” class is formed by person created to command, the “Beta” class has a superior instruction, without commanding duty and the other 3 classes “Gamma”, “Delta”, and “Epsilon” have a decreasing grade of intelligence. “Epsilon” are described as “half-dumb” and are created to do worst works without complaining . Generally, everyone is created and conditioned to follow his role in society, and everyone wear an uniform colored with the distinctive color of his class.
The psycho-physic conditioning begin from childhood and is continued with the hypnopedic repetition of slogan; everyone is forced to love his life, his social collocation, his class and the color of his uniform. Every unhappiness is resolved by SOMA, an anti-depressant drug. Under many aspects the “Brave New World” society can be considered ideal and utopic : humanity is freed from trouble, wealth,, technologically advanced, freed from poverty and wars, and forever happy. The irony is that this ideal condition is obtained eliminating things that generally are considered important for human beings: family, love, art, religion, literature and philosophy. In his description of society Huxley didn’t included the genetic engineering because the book was written 20 years before Watson and Crick discovery of DNA. Citizens of New World have no knowledge about past, they only knows that bad things happened in past and that their world is the best world possible. They know how children born in past, and the words “father” and “mother” are used as insults. After the description of this new world, in the second part of the book we discover that a New Mexico area has been maintained as a pre-Ford area for social studies and for tourism. Here there is the presentation of John, sons of two citizens of new world and born in the reserve, where mother had disappeared during a travel. John grew up following the Zuni (a people of native Americans) lifestyle and educated with a mixture of Zuni and Christian culture. The mother teach him to read books and he is fascinated by Shakespeare works hidden from the book destruction operated by Coordinators. Discovered by two alfa during a travel in the reserve, John and his mother are obliged to return in the new world, where the mother begin to take SOMA till she dies, and the son, that didn’t accepted his new society, try to hide himself in a lighthouse, where he begins to live alone. When he is discovered, his desperation for the incapacity to join the new society force him to suicide.
