Crash di sistema al riavvio/spegnimento?

Salve a tutti ho un portatile Toshiba m30-304 (scheda video nvidia go5200) su cui ho installato la ubuntu 5.04 in condivisione con win xp home.
Ho un grave problema che si manifesta saltuariamente (ma abbastanza frequentemente) quando spengo o riavvio il computer da ubuntu?
In pratica invece di vedere la modalità testo del logout, ho una schermata tutta corrotta con righe in parte orizzontali e verticali di vari colori e il pc si blocca per cui sono costretto a spegnere con il tasto di accensione e poi puntualmente trovo file corrotti (penso dovutri al fatto che l'unmounting non è stato eseguito).
Poichè questo problema l'ho notato la prima volta dopo l'installazione dei driver nvidia (ho una go5200) ho provato a sostituire quelli di default con gli ultimi rilasciati da nvidia, ma il problema persiste per cui prima di spegnere il pc ho sempre paura che possa succedere questo problema.
Vi è mai capitato?
Da cosa può dipendere?
Come posso risolvere?
Prima di installare ubuntu avevo la suse 9.2 e con quella non ho mai avuto questi problemi. Qualcuno sa quale è la versione dei driver nvidia installati con la suse9.2?
Può essere un problema dato da gnome o da qualche settaggio di chiusura troppo "aggressivo"?

Come possibile soluzione al problema sul forum di nVNews consigliano di avviare il modulo con questo comando (o parametro?):

ma non ho capito dove lo devo inserire e nel caso non abbia effetti come fare a tornare alla situazione attuale.

Oggi mi ha dato di nuovo il problema per cui ho fatto una foto.
A differenza di quanto ho letto da altre parti, nel mio caso il computer è effettivamente bloccato in quanto anche dando comandi tipo reboot, startx non succede nulla e l'unica cosa da fare è riavviare a caldo.

Ragazzi mi seguite nel mio ragionamento un attimo (da niubbio ho bisogno dell'assistenza di qualche esperto).
Da quello che so io linux in quanto tale è il kernel sul quale poi le diverse distribuzioni costruiscono il sistema operativo usando diversi programmi, driver, applicazioni e, penso, settaggi.
Se è così poichè questo problema lo ho con la ubuntu 5.04 con i driver nvidia (sia quelli di default di ubuntu che gli ultimi rilasciati da nvidia 7667), ma non con la suse 9.2 che avevo prima (usando i driver nvidia anche in quel caso), mi è venuto il dubbio che il problema possa nascere da una versione differente del driver nvidia (per gli utenti suse 9.2 qua'è la vostra versione del driver nvidia) o ad un diverso modo di effettuare il logout dalla sessione grafica che manda in crash (saltuariamente) il SO.
E' possibile fare un confronto tra le due distribuzioni per capire da dove nasce il problema?

PS2 sul sito di nvforum ci sono molti suggerimenti per problemi analoghi, ma sembrerebbe che nessuno sia risolutivo del problema per cui prima di provarli (rischiando di peggiorare la situazione) vorrei vedere se in quest'altro modo si arriva ad una soluzione.

Potrebbe essere una interazione infelice tra i driver nvidia e il framebuffer. Non so se ubuntu usa il framebuffer (ubuntiani?), ma se lo usa varrebbe la pena provare a disattivarlo al boot (linux vga=normal al prompt di lilo)

Ma questo comando a qualche cosa a che vedere con il framebuffer di cui parlavi nel post precedente?

anche se ancora non so cosa dovrebbe fare.

Quel file (che non devi toccare) è stato rinominato in modprobe.preload nei kernel 2.6. Qualcuno che usa ubuntu ha idea di cosa hanno combinato e di che fine ha fatto modprobe.conf?

In attesa che gli amici del clan di ubuntu mi dicano che fine ha fatto il modprobe.conf, mi sono accorto (ma lo devo testare + a fondo) che se invece di fare il logout uso Ctrl-Alt-Backspace si chiude la sessione senza problemi e riloggandomi dal prompt e dando sudo reboot faccio il reboot senza problemi.
Adesso provo.

Ho provato e funziona e, meglio ancora, se invece di fare riavvio o spegnimento macchina faccio il logout dalla sessione e solo alla successiva schermata di login faccio il reboot o lo spegnimento della macchina, funziona lo stesso senza dare problemi (ho fatto poche prove però).
Edit: questo ultimo modo da problema lo stesso quando si fa il reboot.

A questo punto mi sta venendo il dubbio che il problema possa nascere dal modo in cui si avvia e spegne la macchina.
Vorrei quindi provare ad avviare ubuntu in modalità testo (come si fa?), avviare X, chiudereX e fare da prompt il reboot e lo spegnimento (quale è il comando?).
Se così non da + problemi, in seguito posso tramite scripts automatizzare la fase di avvio di X in modo che parta in modalità testuale e subito dopo il login avvii X?

Tutti i tentativi del post precedente creano l'errore allo stesso modo, però forse ho trovato come risolver il problema:
mettendo vga=normal all'avvio (per disabilitare il framebuffer) e disabilitando anche il logo di avvio di nvidia (mettendo Option "NoLogo" nel file xorg.conf.
Da quando ho messo entrambe non ho + avuto il problema ed ho riavviato abbastanza spesso.
Vi farò sapere!!!

Anche questo non é andato a buon fine.
Ho notato però che spesso e volentieri il problema appare se nella sessione che sto chiudendo ho effettuato modifiche alla configurazione (ad esempio colore del desktop) o qualche aggiornamento di sistema.
Possibile che le cose siano collegate?

Anche con questo continua a dare a crashare allo shutdown (non tutte le volte).
Che dite disinstallo gli ultimi driver nvidia e metto quelli della serie 6xxx o quelli inclusi in ubuntu?

Non so esattamente cosa faccia modprobe.conf, ma se si tratta di caricare dei moduli all'avvio (come ide-generic, nvidia, ecc...) c'è da usare /etc/modules, anche nei kernel 2.6, su debian ed ubuntu (a altri surrogati).
ad esempio tempo fa dovevo forzare la connessione di rete a 10mbit e gli howto che ho trovato parlavano proprio di mettere l'opzione in /etc/modules.

quanto a modprobe.preload, non l'ho mai visto nè su debian nè su ubuntu...
