VCM is an interesting idea and one that NEC are quite happy to license to other vendors. However by its very scarcity and rarity coupled with its nonproprietary nature brings up the obvious question - why is no one licensing this stuff?

< Apart from NEC, only Kingston makes VCM modules... which again leads to the question - why? The answer to this lies in performance. At no stage did we notice any performance advantages at all using VCRAM over standard PC133 SDRAM. The quality of the module itself is excellent - its a 2-2-2 module (although its EPROM is set at a slightly more conservative setting of 2-2-3), and runs quite happily up to around 155Mhz, its just that we could not find a single real-world benchmark which scores higher when a VCRAM module in substituted in place of a PC133 SDRAM module.
