Review: A+
A great remake that isn't so much a reincarnation of its 8-bit daddy, as it is an amplification. By Scott Sharkey 05/15/2009 To come straight to the point, Punch Out!! on Wii isn't as good as the original. It is, in every aspect, far and away a much better game. The best videogame remakes aren't the ones that slavishly recreate every aspect of their originals, nor are they wholly new creations dressed in the trappings of nostalgia. They're more like what's been done with Punch Out!! (don't forget the exclamation points): a game that isn't so much a reincarnation of its 8-bit daddy, as it is an amplification. It's not what the old game actually was, but what we remember it being. It takes the parts that loom large in our memory, and expands them to match the stature they've gained over the years. In a literal way that's what's been done with the characters themselves. It's a little strange to go back to the original NES version and realize that while the boxers are huge -- especially when compared to the diminutive protagonist -- they do not actually come anywhere near to filling the screen. That's how we remember them, though, and that's how they appear here. In a less obvious way, that's what the rest of the game accomplishes. The already tight controls are even more responsive, the tricks of timing and observation have more depth, and the physical consequences of success or failure are much clearer. You always used to know when you screwed up a punch, but now it's even more obvious just how badly you're being punished for it -- without any need to glance at the life bar. Cartoonish physicality was the hallmark of the old game, and even though the boxers now have a much wider range of actions, reactions, patterns and telegraphs, every move they make is so physically distinct that it never creates unfair confusion. Punches and cues may initially appear similar enough to fake you out, but if you know what to look for, there's always a way to tell them apart, and if you screw up, there's never anyone to blame but yourself. Really, that's pretty much the ideal way to add depth to a familiar game. The classic control scheme hasn't been muddied with extra options or power-ups. The standard four punches, star punch, block, and dodge are, in fact, identical. But after the first couple fights finish introducing the basics, you'll begin to notice just how much more nuanced and complex the fights have become. The game is working within its already ideal constraints, despite what must have been great temptation to paint outside the lines. Just as importantly, Punch Out!! is not a short game. The Major, Minor, and World circuits include all the original fighters, a couple new ones, and even reintroduces some characters from the under-appreciated SNES game. But it may seem that it's cleaving just a little too close to its source material. Beating the last guy and winning the championship is an accomplishment, to be sure, but it wouldn't have been enough. Fortunately, that's where the game really comes into its own. Title Defense mode, unlocked upon completion of the original three circuits, isn't just some kind of tacked-on bonus. In fact, it's more than half of the game. Each of your opponents return; faster, tougher, and with whole new patterns that subvert your expectations. It's kind of a shock when, after finally taking down Mr. Sandman and claiming the belt, you get your ass completely handed to you by Glass freaking Joe. The realization dawns that if he's actually managed to become a credible threat, what is the last guy you narrowly scraped past going to be like when you finally make it that far? The original three circuits are practically an introduction. Other additions, like an exhibition mode that adds specific challenges (e.g. knock down Glass Joe three times then let him win by decision, or defeat Great Tiger by TKO with just three punches), and the two-player vs. mode, are just gravy at this point. In fact, the only substantial complaint I have is that the 1-on-1 mode only allows players to control twin Little Macs, rather than providing the option of taking the reins of one of the other fighters. In the face of everything else, however, that's mostly just a testament to how much Punch Out!! has been spoiling me. So, yeah. Not only is Punch Out!! worth the 50 bucks, but lands on a very short list of Wii games I feel that way about. Even better, while Punch Out!! makes for an entertaining enough solitary experience, the back-seat driving aspect makes it positively shine as a party game. There's nothing quite like having a few friends over, passing the controller around, shouting advice, and just generally bonding over some hilarious, bloodless violence.
