China Shuts Down Popular Blogs on Tibet

[IC Tibet] The Chinese authorities have clamped down on the activities of a well known Tibetan writer, Woeser (aka Oser. Ch: Wei Se), by directing the closure of her two popular blogs in Chinese, according to media reports.

Woeser, born in 1966, is one of the few Tibetan writers publishing in Chinese. She graduated from the Southwestern Institute for National Minorities and has worked as a journalist.

Woeser has participated in a number of petitions calling for preservation of traditional Tibetan culture and respect for ethnic values. One of her petitions resulted in the Chinese swimmer Zhang Jian abandoning his plans to swim across Namtso Lake, one of the three sacred lakes of Tibet. Another campaign resulted in the cancellation of a concert in Lhasa by the singer Han Hong who had planned to fly over the Potala Palace in a helicopter and land in front of it.

China shuts Tibetan author's blog after Dalai Lama birthday wishes

Beijing - China has shut down a popular blog by a Tibetan author after she wrote birthday wishes for the Dalai Lama and touched on other sensitive topics, the writer and a Website operator said Monday.
The blog also discussed the HIV/Aids problem in Tibet, the impact of the recently completed Tibet railway on Tibetan culture, and the 40th anniversary of what happened in Tibet during the tumultuous Cultural Revolution.
These issues are all considered sensitive by the Chinese communist government, which has ruled Tibet since sending troops in to "liberate" the remote Himalayan region in 1950.
A manager of one of two Websites that carried the blogs of Oser, who only uses one name, said that they were ordered to remove the blog.

"On July 28 we received an order from the provincial government to shut her the blog. I don't know the reason," said the manager of tibetcul.net, Wangxiu Caidan, a Tibetan who gave the Chinese transliteration of her name. "I believe the order came from the central government."
Wangxiu said that the blog was the most popular one on her Website, enjoying 280,000 clicks since it was linked to the site in February last year.
Oser, a Tibetan formerly based in Lhasa but now in Beijing, confirmed that her blog had been shut down and criticized authorities for restricting freedom of expression.
"It's unfortunate. It's unfair. In this kind of environment in China, it's very hard to express one's true opinions and voice," Oser said.

She said that her birthday wishes and poem posted July 6, the Dalai Lama's birthday, praised the spiritual leader who has been exiled in India since 1959.
She also posted pictures of yak butter lamps on the site as a birthday gift for him, while other writing praised the Dalai Lama.
"There were a lot of commentaries, which showed Tibetans' respect for the Dalai Lama," Oser said.
She said that she had no plans to create another blog in the near future but was working on a book about Tibet.

In 2003 China banned Notes on Tibet, a book that Oser wrote that revealed sensitive religious issues, including how the exiled Dalai Lama was still revered by Tibetans inside Tibet.
China regards the Dalai Lama as a "splittist" bent on seeking independence for the territory, although he insists that he only wants limited autonomy for his homeland.

BEIJING: Chinese officials in Tibet speculate that the Tibet railway link may be later stretched to an area close to Nathu La Pass, which was opened on July 6 for border trade after a gap of 44 years.
The opening of the border was seen in New Delhi as an acknowledgement by Beijing of the fact that Sikkim was part of India.
Another reason of concern for India could be the fact that China has often indicated that the Nepalese government has been requesting a direct rail link between Nepal and China for a long time.
The move to connect the rail to Xigaze is also being seen as an attempt to build up the image of Panchen Lama, even as the country asks the world to look beyond the Dalai Lama. Xigaze is his traditional seat, even though the government-appointed Panchen Lama lives mostly in Beijing.
Critics including Khedroob Thondup, nephew of Dalai Lama and member of the Tibetan parliament in exile, have said the railway project has serious military significance.
"Strategically, Tibet will become one of China's biggest military zones, primarily to combat India's influence," he was quoted as saying.

Queste le parole pronunciate dal Dalai Lama a Nagpur davanti ad una folla di duemila persone convenute nella località indiana per una serie d’insegnamenti sulla dottrina buddista.
Parlando ad un gruppo ristretto di cinquecento tibetani, Sua Santità ha inoltre voluto sgombrare il campo da ogni apparente malinteso circa i rapporti tra il cosiddetto Approccio della Via di Mezzo, la via perseguita dal Dalai Lama e dal governo tibetano in esilio per la soluzione del problema tibetano, e la richiesta di una totale indipendenza a gran voce avanzata da parte della diaspora.
Il leader tibetano ha affermato che sia la lotta per l’indipendenza sia gli sforzi del governo in esilio per una soluzione negoziale del problema sono ugualmente giustificati in quanto in entrambi i casi ci si batte per il Tibet. “Il Tibetan Youth Congress chiede l’indipendenza e lo fa per il bene del Tibet. Noi cerchiamo di risolvere la questione del paese attraverso la Via di Mezzo perché la situazione è estremamente critica, ma anche questo approccio è per il bene del Tibet”. Il Dalai Lama ha così proseguito: “Viviamo in un paese democratico e ogni individuo od organizzazione ha il diritto di esprimere le proprie idee ed opinioni. La lotta del TYC per una completa indipendenza è un’istanza del tutto legittima ed è sbagliato considerarla come un’azione contro la figura del Dalai Lama”.

Si teme una reazione violenta della Cina, mentre la popolazione mongola celebra la riconquistata libertà religiosa, dopo gli anni del comunismo.

Ulaanbaatar (AsiaNews) – La popolazione della Mongolia attende la venuta del Dalai Lama, ma a causa di possibili proteste della Cina, molti dettagli della visita rimangono segreti.

Il capo dei tibetani in esilio, dovrebbe giungere oggi o domani mattina nella capitale e rimanervi fino al 27 o al 28 agosto. L’ultima sua visita nel paese, nel 2002, aveva scatenato le ire di Pechino, che vede nel Dalai Lama uno che cospira a dividere il territorio cinese, mirando alla separazione del Tibet.

Il leader spirituale e politico sarà ospitato nel grande monastero di Gandantegcheling. La strada principale dall’aeroporto alla città è tutta decorata con festoni e con gigantografie del Dalai Lama. Il capo del buddismo tibetano terrà alcune lezioni a monaci e meditazioni pubbliche. Pur non essendo una “visita di stato”, l’ospite sarà accolto in un edificio del governo alla periferia della capitale.

Un fatto non ancora chiaro è se il presidente mongolo Nambaryn Enkhbayar, fervente buddista, incontrerà il Dalai Lama in modo ufficiale. C’è infatti il rischio che Pechino, finora silenziosa sulla visita, scateni una nuova offensiva contro il leader e contro il paese ospitante. Nel 2002 la Cina ha bloccato il traffico ferroviario con la Mongolia, per frenare ogni tentativo dei tibetani cinesi di raggiungere il loro capo e ha fermato per un periodo le esportazioni verso la Mongolia.

La Mongolia, era un paese a maggioranza buddista fino all’avvento del comunismo nel 1921. Nel ’37, una feroce persecuzione ha distrutto centinaia di monasteri e ucciso quasi 20 mila monaci buddisti tibetani.

La venuta del Dalai Lama in Mongolia è visto da molti come una celebrazione della libertà religiosa, riconquistata 16 anni fa con il nuovo sistema democratico.

Dalai Lama's sister retires as president of school chain

Dharamsala, Aug 20 (IANS) Tibetan spiritual leader Dalai Lama's younger
sister Jetsun Pema has retired as the president of a chain of schools run by
them for Tibetan children in India.
Tsewang Yeshi, who served as the executive director of the Tibetan
Children's Village (TCV) Schools, has succeeded Pema.
Though she may have officially stepped down last week, Pema has vowed to
contribute in whatever way she can to the education of Tibetan children. 'My
retirement doesn't mean I will just sit back and say mantras (prayer
chantings).'
She will, in particular, oversee the construction of a Tibetan college being
built in Bangalore at the cost of $10 million. She said a Tibetan college
has long been needed to educate the youth in an environment where they can learn and retain their 'Tibetan-ness'.
Pema took charge of the administration of the TCV schools in June 1964 at
the behest of the Dalai Lama. She has since then been a motherly figure for
thousands of orphaned Tibetan children.
Pema's hardest times at the school were in the early days when it was
difficult to accommodate the growing number of destitute Tibetan children
and there was very little food to feed them.
'My greatest times are when our students fare well in the national level
exams,' she remarked.
TCV looks after the well-being of more than 15,000 children and youths and
has an over 1,200-member strong staff.
Apart from schools, TCV also runs vocational training centres, youth
hostels, old people's homes and day care centres.
Pema has served in various capacities in the exiled Tibetan society as a
youth and women's leader. She also held the position of education minister
in the Tibetan government-in-exile.
In 1995, the exiled Tibetan parliament awarded her the title 'Mother of
Tibet' in recognition of her dedication and service to Tibetan children.
She wrote her autobiography 'Tibet: My Story', which was published in 1996.
Pema also dabbled in acting and played the role of the great mother in
Jean-Jacques Annaud's Brad Pitt-starrer 'Seven Years in Tibet'. The film was
an account of Austrian mountaineer Heinrich Harrer who set out to climb the
Nanga Parbat in the Indian Himalayas in 1939.
Born in Tibetan capital Lhasa on July 7, 1940, Pema came to India in 1950
and studied first at St. Joseph's Convent in Kalimpong and later at the
Loretto Convent in Darjeeling (both in West Bengal) from where she completed
her Senior Cambridge in 1960. She later studied in Switzerland and pursued
higher studies in Britain.

La Cina critica il Paese vicino per aver dato ospitalità al capo tibetano giudicato un “separatista”.

Ulaanbaatar (AsiaNews) – Incuranti delle critiche cinesi, migliaia di mongoli hanno accolto il Dalai Lama, giunto ieri nel paese, per un viaggio di 8 giorni. Pechino ha criticato pubblicamente la scelta di ospitarlo e ha bloccato i voli per la Mongolia.

Il capo del buddismo tibetano si è recato anzitutto al monastero di Gandantegchenlin, il maggior centro del buddismo in Mongolia. Di fronte al tempio Janraiseg, la pagoda più grande del monastero, egli ha benedetto la folla che lo osannava.

“Dobbiamo puntare su un’educazione moderna – ha detto il Dalai Lama – ma non dobbiamo dimenticare le nostre tradizioni e costumi”. Il capo tibetano ha osato fare un paragone fra Mongolia e Tibet: “Molti anni fa la Mongolia era simile al Tibet e i cittadini di entrambi i Paesi erano barbari. Ma dopo l’educazione e l’apprendimento, siamo cresciuti, diventando gli Stati di adesso”.

Pechino è furibonda per la visita e lo spazio concessi al Dalai Lama da parte dello Stato confinante. Oggi il ministero cinese degli esteri ha dichiarato che “il Dalai Lama non è solo una figura religiosa, ma un esiliato politico da molto tempo impegnato in attività separatiste che minano l’unità nazionale”. “La Cina – si aggiunge – è risolutamente contraria a che qualunque paese gli offra un palco per pubblicizzare tali attività”.

Oggi i voli Air China Pechino-Ulaanbaatar sono stati cancellati, ufficialmente per “maltempo”, sebbene le indicazioni meteorologiche indicassero tempo buono. Quattro anni, in occasione di un’altra visita in Mongolia, la Cina aveva chiuso le frontiere.

Il Dalai Lama, fuggito dal Tibet occupato militarmente dai cinesi nel 1959, continua a domandare per il Tibet una sorta di autonomia, pur rimanendo legato alla Cina. Ma la proposta è rifiutata da Pechino.

Il capo del buddismo tibetano è arrivato ieri sera all’aeroporto Gengis Khan della capitale mongola, con un volo proveniente dal Giappone. Ad attenderlo, vi erano personalità ufficiali, monaci di Gandantegchenlin e i rappresentanti dell’ambasciata indiana. Nei prossimi giorni il Dalai Lama terrà alcune lezioni in uno stadio, aperte a tutti. Avrà anche incontri speciali con personale dei monasteri e alcune conferenze televisive.

How an exile defies China

As the Olympics near, Beijing is ever more concerned to check the Dalai
Lama's influence

[The Guardian]When the first cracks appeared in the concrete base and bridges of the
Qinghai Tibet railway, just weeks after the carefully staged, triumphal
opening on July 1 (the 85th birthday of the Chinese Communist party), they
were not the only sign that all is not well with China's policies in Tibet.
The cracks seem to be the result of the unstable geology of the Tibetan
plateau. Equally worrying to Beijing, shifts in Tibetan political geology
have caused cracks in the official Chinese narrative of unity and harmony
between Tibet and China.
There had been sporadic unrest for several months: in November last year the
monks of Drepung monastery in central Tibet staged a sit-down demonstration
against "patriotic education" - the government's enforced propaganda
campaign. The demonstration was echoed in other important monasteries in the ,region.
Then last January, in a religious address delivered in India, the exiled
Dalai Lama called on Tibetans to stop wearing wildlife skins to save animals
from extinction. The results were dramatic: from Lhasa to Gansu, Tibetans
gathered for public fur burnings. Confronted with this evidence of his
continuing influence, the government accused the Dalai Lama of promoting
"social disorder" and responded, bizarrely, with a pro-fur campaign in which
TV presenters were ordered to wear fur on air.
At the end of May, the arrival in Lhasa of a new, hardline party secretary,
Zhang Qingli, signalled a renewed campaign against the Dalai Lama's
influence, with a tightening control of religious practice. Zhang announced
that the Communist party was engaged in a "fight-to-the-death struggle"
against the Dalai Lama. In Lhasa the campaign took on a renewed virulence as the opening day of the railway approached.
But in mid-July, in the great monastery of Kumbum in Qinghai, people began
to gather spontaneously, in unusual numbers. They had come, they explained,to wait for the Dalai Lama. A rumour of his imminent arrival had swept the
province with an extraordinary and, for the government, dismaying effect.
The Chinese government is engaged in a slow-motion exchange of views with
the exiled Tibetan spiritual leader, but they do not anticipate his return
any time soon.
And from their point of view, they are right to be cautious. If only the
rumour of the return of a spiritual leader who left Tibet in 1959 can still
cause thousands of devotees to gather, then decades of Chinese propaganda
have failed to extirpate his influence. The authorities watched the crowds
in Kumbum grow for the best part of a week, then sent in the security
forces.
The upsurge in tension has come at a critical moment for a Chinese
government anxious to project an image of harmony to chime with China's
self-proclaimed "peaceful rise". One impetus for the talks with the Tibetan
government in exile is the hope that they might lower the risk of
embarrassing demonstrations at the Olympic games in 2008 - in which Beijing
has made a heavy investment of cash and prestige.
But how solid is Beijing's commitment to the talks? Reports are sketchy,
though the Dalai Lama regards the process as positive. Sceptics believe that
the drawn-out nature of the exchanges signals only a slight modification of
Beijing's policy of waiting for the death of the 71-year-old Dalai Lama to
deprive Tibetans of a rival focus of authority. If the talks are to have any
positive outcome, both sides will have to overcome a long history of mutual
suspicion. On the evidence of Beijing's continuing campaigns against the
Dalai Lama and ever tighter restrictions on Tibetan religious practice, that
is still a long way off.

nel buddismo una pratica del genere è impensabile.
Tenzin Gyatso stesso ha spiegato che esiste solo una tipologia di suicidio "permessa" (ossia uccidersi (anche se attraverso una particolare meditazione il gesto può essere un'imitazione da premio oscar!) per impedire che l'altro non ammazzi),che cmq se non si crede alla dottriana dei Bodhisattiva commetterlo è da biiiiiiiip e che non ha nulla a che fare con i Kamikaze tanto di moda ultimamente.
