Instead, government officials from Mubarak to Foreign Minister Ahmed Aboul Gheit have blamed Hamas for abandoning the cease-fire with Israel and seeming to seek Israeli retaliation. On Thursday, for example, Aboul Gheit said that Egypt had warned Hamas of Israel's intentions, but Hamas "served Israel the opportunity on a golden platter to hit Gaza."

Ti ringrazio. Fonte israeliana: http://www.haaretz.com/hasen/spages/1050460.html Six months ago Israel asked and received a cease-fire from Hamas. It unilaterally violated it when it blew up a tunnel, while still asking Egypt to get the Islamic group to hold its fire. Direi che non c'e' altro d'aggiungere sulla questione.

Israel faces UN war crimes probe after dozens of civilians were moved to safe house - then bombed in airstrike 24 hours later
By Mail Foreign Service Last updated at 6:07 PM on 09th January 2009 * UN official demands war crimes probe * UN accuses Israel of herding 110 Palestinians into safe house - then shelling it, leaving 30 dead * One third of people dying in Gaza are children - report * Poll shows offensive has full backing of Israeli voters * Obama 'may open up talks with Hamas' * Israel and Hamas defy UN Security Council resolution demanding ceasefire and withdrawal Israeli troops were accused today of evacuating Palestinian civilians to a house in Gaza and then shelling the building 24 hours later, killing at least 30 and injuring dozens. Raising the prospect of a war crimes investigation , the United Nations said that eyewitnesses had told them 110 civilians had taken shelter inside the building when it was hit last Sunday, a day after Israel began the ground offensive aimed at stopping Hamas firing rockets at Israeli communities. The UN said about half the dead were children. A Red Cross medical team was blocked from reaching the area until three days later when rescurers were allowed in on foot, without ambulances. Israel said it was investigating the claims. A thirteen-year-old boy has given a chilling account of the horror he witnessed after Israel herded 110 Palestinians - many of them children - into a safe house, then bombed it, killing 30 people. 'Abu Salah died, his wife died,' said Ahmed Ibrahim Samouni from his hospital bed. 'Abu Tawfiq died, his son died, his wife also died. Mohammed Ibrahim died, and his mother died. Ishaq died and Nasar died. The wife of Nael Samouni died. Many people died.' Samouni was wounded in the leg and chest but survived the Israeli shelling of the house in the Zeitun neighbourhood of Gaza City. This morning the UN accused the Israeli army of evacuating 110 Palestinians there - about half of which were children -then repeatedly shelled it 24 hours later, killing at least 30 of the civilians inside. At least nine of those killed were in Samouni's family - including his mother. We started an inquiry but we still don't know about it.' The top UN human rights official called today for a war crimes probe after the shocking incident. Navi Pillay demanded a 'credible and independent' investigation into any violations of international humanitarian law in the Gaza conflict which may constitute war crimes. Gabriela Shalev, left, observes at the United Nations Security Council meeting She also said that U.N. human rights monitors must be deployed in Israel as well as Gaza and the West Bank to document violations. 'The vicious cycle of provocation and retribution must be brought to an end,' she said. Scores of people, including children, had been killed or wounded in 'Israel's totally unacceptable strikes' against clearly marked U.N. facilities sheltering Gaza civilians, she said. Harm to civilians caused by rockets fired from the Gaza Strip into southern Israel was also 'unacceptable'. The UN was quoted by the AFP as saying: 'according to several testimonies, on 4 January Israeli foot soldiers evacuated approximately 110 Palestinians into a single-residence house in Zeitun (half of whom were children) warning them to stay indoors. The IDF claims one million people in Israel are within striking range of Gaza rockets 'Twenty-four hours later, Israeli forces shelled the home repeatedly, killing approximately 30.' The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) called it 'one of the gravest incidents since the beginning of operations' by Israeli forces in Gaza on December 27, AFP said. 'Those who survived and were able walked two kilometres to Salah Ed Din road before being transported to hospital in civilian vehicles. Three children, the youngest of whom was five months old, died upon arrival at the hospital,' OCHA was quoted as saying in a report on the situation in the battered Gaza Strip. Red Cross rescue workers were reportedly barred from the scene for three days. Yesterday the Red Cross vented its fury at Israel after the strike, saying it had found four starving children at the house clinging to the corpses of their dead mothers. 'The Israeli military must have been aware of the situation but did not assist the wounded.' The accusation came as a 'credible' report from Gaza claimed one third of the 760 reported killed in the conflict have been children. As of Thursday, 257 children were among the approximately 760 reported dead in Gaza. There were another 1,080 children among the 3,100 injured in the conflict, according to statistics from Gaza's health ministry. The UN's top humanitarian official, John Holmes, described the numbers as 'credible' and deeply disturbing. UN officials say about half of the casualties were civilians. Another report claimed Barack Obama is set to open up low-level talks with Hamas when he takes over the presidency. Both Israel and Hamas have defied a UN Security Council resolution demanding a ceasefire. Last night the 15-member UN Security Council overwhelmingly passed the resolution demanding an immediate ceasefire and Israel to fully withdraw from Gaza. Fourteen members of the Council voted for the resolution - with the United States abstaining. 'At last...the United Nations is speaking clearly with one voice,' said British Foreign Minister David Miliband. Israeli army officers and soldiers pour over maps as they gather for a briefing in a Palestinian house during an operation against Hamas militants this week Israeli army officers and soldiers pour over maps as they gather for a briefing in a Palestinian house during an operation against Hamas militants this week But the hopes for a truce were dashed with Israel rejecting the resolution -while Hamas gave its own answer by continuing to fire rockets at Israeli cities. Israel's Prime Minister Ehud Olmert said the UN resolution 'cannot work' and declared: 'The firing of rockets this morning only goes to show that the UN decision is unworkable and will not be adhered to by the murderous Palestinian organisations.' Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni gave an indication the guns were unlikely to fall silent soon: 'Israel has acted, is acting and will act only according to its considerations, the security needs of its citizens and its right to self defence,' she said. Israel's military commanders appear keen to pursue what is termed a third stage of the operation with additional ground troops, many of them reservists, being sent into the heart of Gaza's built-up areas to flush out more gunmen and to try to secure further gains - an operation fraught with dangers for civilians. A rocket explosion like a deadly firework lights up the sky over Gaza City last night A rocket explosion like a deadly firework lights up the sky over Gaza City last night Hamas officials also dismissed the UN resolution. Spokesman Ayman Taha said : 'Even though we are the main actors on the ground in Gaza, we were not consulted about this resolution and they have not taken into account our vision and the interests of our people.' The offensive against Gaza has solid support among Israeli voters who go to the polls in a month. Most back Prime Minister Ehud Olmert's aim of ending years of rocket fire into Israel by Hamas guerrillas that have killed 22 people since 2000. Amnesty International has accused both Israel and Hamas of using civilians as human shields. The Red Cross has criticised Israel for its conduct towards civilians in Gaza during the offensive, accusing it of failing to fulfil its obligation to help the wounded. Officials, who claim Israel has denied them access to the Gaza area for four days, said medical teams found four young children huddled by the bodies of their dead mothers in a shelled house. Israel's ambassador in Geneva, Aharon Leshno-Yaar, denied his country was failing in its humanitarian obligations. 'Once the military activity was over, then it was possible for humanitarian teams to evacuate the wounded,' he said. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/worl...urs-later.html Al link soprastante l'articolo originale del UK Daily Mail e relativo repertorio di immagini.
