Onestamente non ho idea di come gli astronomi classifichino i pianeti, mi è però venuta subito alla mente la classificazione alla StarTrek

Previous surveys had looked for distant (10 billion light years away) galaxies by searching in a wavelength of ultraviolet light emitted by hydrogen atoms — distant young galaxies should be blasting out this light, but very few were detected. The problem is that the ultraviolet light never gets out of the galaxies, so we never see them. In this new study, astronomers searched a different wavelength emitted by hydrogen, and voila, ten times as many galaxies could be seen, meaning 90% of them had been missed before."

In case you don't get the humor, dry and subtle as it is, here's a quick primer: Just last month, the Obama Administration—how to put this—tweaked the NASA budget so that manned space travel would no longer be a priority for the agency.

Instead, NASA (which would actually see an increase in funding under the plan), would turn its focus planetside. Robotics, probes, satellites and other autonomous things we haven't thought up yet would be used to explore the vast reaches of the solar system.

PLUTO’S STATUS MAY TAKE a further hit, say Australian astronomers, if around 50 neighbouring space objects join the ranks of the dwarf planets.

Pluto was demoted to ‘dwarf planet’ in a decision by the International Astronomical Union (IAU) in 2006. This decision – which was unpopular with the general public – was based on the discovery of many objects which were a similar size or larger than Pluto in a zone of the Solar System known as the Kuiper Belt.

Other dwarf planets include Ceres, the largest asteroid in the rock-strewn belt between Mars and Jupiter, and four Kuiper Belt objects: Eris, Makemake, Haumea and Quaoar.

Now, astronomers Charley Lineweaver and Marc Norman, from the Australian National University in Canberra, say the definition of what it means to be a dwarf planet should be revised to include many smaller objects too.

“Small Solar System objects are irregularly shaped, like potatoes,” Charley says. “If an object is large enough that its self-gravity has made it round, then it should be classified as a dwarf planet.”

This is because as an object in space becomes larger, the effects of its own gravity become more important in dictating the final shape. They call this limit the ‘potato radius’, and the results were published recently in the Proceedings of the 9th Australian Space Science Conference.

Just down the road from where the shuttle Atlantis is being prepped for flight, the U.S. Air Force launched its own unmanned reusable spaceplane to orbit aboard an Atlas 5 rocket Thursday evening on a round-trip shakedown mission.



The military space shuttle does not carry a crew, but it relies on a laundry list of new technologies that Air Force officials hope will revolutionize how the Pentagon executes its space programs.

"Fundamentally, this is an updated version of the space shuttle," said Gary Payton, the U.S. Air Force's top civilian leader for military space programs. "The Air Force has a suite of military missions in space. This new vehicle could potentially help us do those missions better."

Built by Boeing Phantom Works, the 29-foot-long, 11,000-pound X-37B spacecraft sports a modest cargo bay, a powerful maneuvering engine, a deployable solar array, and stubby wings to guide the ship back to Earth after its mission.

Confido che stiano usando budget difesa già stanziato per non dare altri soldi alla Nasa, cosa che andrebbe contro l'opinione pubblica, ma che gli studi non siano limitati all'ambito militare...

A quanto ho capito hanno deciso di divulgare i dati relativi all'apparecchio e alle sue performance (in un certo qual modo per proseguire, con soldi della difesa, il lavoro iniziato dalla Nasa). Ciò che verrà invece fatto con questo X-37B una volta in orbita resta riservato.
Quasi sicuramente saranno anche ricognizioni, in quanto è molto più manovrabile di un satellite (la cui orbita spesso è "prevedibile" e quindi si può far in tempo a nascondere per il tempo necessario gli obiettivi sensibili). Leggevo che volevano coprire il vuoto lasciato dal ritiro dell'SR-71

Voyager 2 ha sviluppato un problema di formattazione dei dati scientifici (che comunque con un po' di fortuna gli ingegneri del JPL dovrebbero essere in grado di risolvere):

Voyager 2, which has been traveling through the solar system since the late '70s, has suffered a data formatting glitch that is preventing NASA from interpreting the content of its scientific data transmissions. Control and diagnostic transmissions are unaffected, which should enable the engineers at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory to troubleshoot the problem, provided they're patient—it currently takes nearly 13 hours for transmissions from Earth to catch up with the probe.

According to a statement released by the JPL, the problem first became apparent on April 22nd. Data from the scientific transmission, which currently reports on the conditions at the very edge of the solar system, began coming through with improper formatting, making it impossible to interpret the contents. Engineering data is still intelligible, so the JPL staff is expecting that it will be possible to figure out what's going wrong and introduce a fix. Serious attempts at repair were delayed by a planned roll maneuver, and only started on Friday. With a round-trip time of over a day, however, progress will undoubtedly be slow.

According to an Associated Press report, engineers think that there's been a fault in the memory that stores the formatted data prior to transmission. This either corrupted its current contents, or has introduced some bad bits into the onboard memory. It should be possible to either reset the bad memory, or program the system to stop using the errant hardware entirely.

Voyager 2 is currently the second-most distant human-made object, trailing its twin, Voyager 1, by about 3 billion kilometers (Voyager 1 is now 16.9 billion kilometers—about 10.5 billion miles—from Earth). Right now, the probes are near the turbulent sector of space where the solar wind pushes up against interstellar space. Both probes are expected to cross into interstellar space within the next few years, providing our first in-place observational data from outside the solar system. They'll also record what happens at the boundary itself—they may cross it several times, given that its precise location fluctuates with changes in solar activity.
