PlanetXbox: Quite a bit of emphasis has been placed on Per-Pixel Shading, what is it and how does it work?

NVIDIA: A pixel shader converts texture coordinate information (i.e., locations within a texture map that's been applied to a polygon) to a color. This includes not only base color information, but also transparency and blending information. The output color is the color of the pixel as it finally appears on the screen.

PlanetXbox: What kind of benefits will gamers see from games that utilize Per-Pixel Shading?

NVIDIA: Pixel Shaders create ambiance with materials and surfaces that mimic reality. The infinite material effects let you replace that artificial computerized look with high-impact organic surfaces. You can see hair and blemishes on the faces, dimples on golf balls , a subtle leather look on a red chair, and texture and grain on wood. By altering the lighting and surface effects, artists can manipulate colors, textures, or shapes and generate complex, realistic atmospheres.
