Come da titolo, cosa vuol dire questa espressione?

Con la mia scarsa e bieca intelligenza riesco a malapena ad arrivare a LOL....

Più che altro lo chiedo perché vedo che molti lo mettono in mezzo alle frasi in posti che non ci stanno per niente, che ne troncano il senso e danno quasi fastidio...


Poi, personalmente, è una parola che non mi piace...!

Ma da dove o da cosa nasce questo termine? e il LOL?
