The seasonics like the noistakers have vents that allow heat to be recirculated into the case. This is news to me, but in fact, it is generally acknowledged that this is one of the reasons the seasonic runs cool at low fan speeds. It would be more difficult to flow the exhaust though the rear vents only - more fan pressure would be required resulting in more noise. Codice:
Here are some figures to make my point. Scenario 1: 120mm fan pushing air through PSU, half of which is recirculated (half of PSU heat is taken back into the case). Scenario 2: All flow is exhausted through the back of the PSU, flow roughly half of the above @ the same rpm (because half of the exhaust area is shut off). In both these scenarios, the same air flow exits the case - in scenario one, the larger air flow is divides into exhaust and recirculation. P(MB,CPU etc.)=200 W P(PSU)=30W Scenario 1, 120 fan pushing 21 l/sec (44 cfm). Temp rise in case = (200W + 30W/2) / (1.2 x 21/2) = 17 deg (from say +25 to +42) Temp rise in PSU exhaust = 30W / (1.2 x 21) = 1.2 deg = 42 +1.2 = 43.2 deg This could result in PSU temp of say 54 deg, or 12 deg above inlet, or ten times temp rise in PSU exhaust. Scenario 2, 120 fan pushing 10.5 l/sec (22 cfm) Temp rise in case = (200W + 0) / (1.2 x 21/2) = 16 deg (from say +25 to +41) Temp rise in PSU = 30W / (1.2 x 10.5) = 2.4 deg = 41 +2.4 = 43.4 deg At this lower flow, temp rise of PSU would be say eight times air temp rise, thus 8 x 2.4 = 19 deg, resulting in total PSU temp of 41 + 19 = 60 deg. (The relative PSU temp rise is usually increasingly larger then the exhaust temp rise at higher air flow.) CONCLUSION: Recirculating PSU heat into the case lowers PSU temp (by 6 deg in example), but also increases case temp (1 deg in my example). Same noise level for both.
