Nikon D70: prime foto "rubate"...
Yesterday I went down the Focus on Imaging show down in Birmingham (UK). I managed to get my hands on the Nikon D70 on the Nikon stand there. First off I’ve been following this forum for a while now as I’ve had more than a passing interest in Nikons D70. I currently have an Olympus 5050z and have no experience of a Digital SLR to date. Of course the other camera I’ve been considering is the Canon EOS 300D? Thought I’d pass on what I saw Nikon let me put my Compact Flash card into the D70 and fire a few shots off. Needless to say they wouldn’t let me wander off with it in the search for better subjects. I’ve posted 3 files straight out of the camera and untouched by Photoshop of course. They’re shot in JPEG mode but have to be honest and say I don’t really know anymore than that as it’s controls and options were somewhat alien to me!! Just a case of firing off a few shots at what the camera was set at. I see from the EXIF info that it was set to underexpose by 2/3rds of a stop. That would explain why some of the other shots were underexposed. Also the Nikon stand was very busy and didn’t get the luxury of being shown the various settings and buttons etc. So the photos are no great shakes (compositionally or otherwise {LOL} and don’t mention the wife’s cold sore as she’s played hell about me posting anyway!!!) and are of the Mrs who was listening to the Nikon rep. until she spotted what I was up too, and one of the Nikon rep discussing the D70 with a couple of chaps interested in it!! I had a look in PS last night and compared to the shots I get with my Oly 5050. The D70 photos seemed very ‘clean’ with good detail and stood a fair degree of enlargement (in comparison though when viewed at 100% then grain is discernable in the out of focus background). Personally I’d say the results look promising – in comparison to my Digital Compact?? Have a look here... http://www.pbase.com/rico101/nikon_d70 So how did it feel – even though plastic (outer) if felt sturdy and solid and sat in my hands very well? Operation – focusing was fast!! This was with the new 18-70mm lens on. Where I tried it seemed gloomy to say the least but it had no problems locking focus what so ever. After my 5050 I was very impressed!! Shutter was fast with no perceivable lag and was quite. Viewfinder I found excellent to use even though it was not that bright where I was. I don’t wear glasses so afraid I couldn’t comment if the same ease of use would apply? I should have handed it my wife who does wear them maybe? Anyways – not a problem to me. I also went over to the Canon stand and tried the Digital Rebel. Didn’t put my Smart Media card it (do they use them?? I dunno?) but tried it for feel etc. Viewfinder I didn’t notice any perceivable difference to the D70 but I did think it didn’t lock focus as accurately or as fast as the D70? Also might add where I used the Canon was in a brighter area of the show. What really put me off it was the noise upon shutter release – quite a ‘clunk’ from the mirror slapping up. This was a tethered model and may not be indicative of one out of the box?? May have had some abuse?? Whatever, it put me off the Canon somewhat. To me on the day, the Nikon felt better, more substantial, slightly heavier than the Canon Rebel and was in BLACK!!!! Hardly an in depth review but just thought I’d pass along what I thought on handling the D70. I was rather impressed with the D70 to be honest. Remember I’m coming to it from using digital compacts. Very impressed with its speed and looking back to my ‘manual’ focus OM2s/p days – well, just no comparison?? Now I have to go back to my little 5050 and wait ……… ![]() Rico P.S.
