Nuove cpu da AMD

Nella giornata di ieri AMD ha ufficialmente introdotto due nuovi processori: si tratta della cpu Athlon4 Mobile a 1.1 Ghz di clock e della cpu Duron 1 Ghz, oltre alla versione Mobile a 900 Mhz. Se la prima non è altro che un'evoluzione della cpu Athlon 4 Mobile, con un aumento di clock di 100 Mhz rispetto al precedente modello, la cpu Duron 1 Ghz rappresenta una novità di tutto rilievo in quanto è la prima ad essere basata sul nuovo Core Morgan, evoluzione del precedente Core Duron (noto con il nome in codice di Spitfire) che integra al suo interno tutte le novità introdotte con la nuova cpu Athlon 4, quindi un minore consumo energetico e il nuovo set di istruzioni 3DNow! Professional, che integra tra le varie cose il supporto alle istruzioni SSE originariamente sviluppate da Intel per la cpu Pentium III.

SUNNYVALE, CA-AUG. 20, 2001-AMD (NYSE: AMD) today marked the second anniversary of the award-winning AMD Athlon(tm) processor by announcing that its new 1.1GHz mobile AMD Athlon 4 and 900MHz mobile AMD Duron(tm) processors, featuring AMD PowerNow!(tm) technology, will be used by Compaq Computer Corporation (NYSE:CPQ) in its best-selling home and small office notebook, the Compaq Presario 1200 series.

Since the introduction two years ago of the AMD Athlon processor, AMD's unit market share for x86 processors has risen from 12.6 percent in the third quarter of 1999 to more than 22 percent in the second quarter of 2001, according to Mercury Research. AMD, traditionally strong in the retail market, has also experienced significant x86 processor market share gains in the small and medium business, government and education markets. According to Dataquest's latest unit share figures, AMD desktop processors commanded 37 percent of the North American small business market, as well as 32 percent of government and 21 percent of education markets in the first quarter of 2001.
