The Duke of URL ha messo on line a questo indirizzo un'intervista fatta a Nick Triantos, PR di nVidia, in merito allo stato delle liberie di driver delle schede nVidia per il sistema Linux. La questione ่ se diventeranno Open Source o meno.
Nick: Basically, NVIDIA's drivers cannot be open sourced. They contain several components which are licensed technology, and we have no rights to share that source code with anyone. We do not even provide source code to OpenGL or our kernel module to our board customers.

NVIDIA does provide an open source driver. It contains full 2D acceleration, and hardware accelerated OpenGL 1.2. It was written for XFree86 3.3, and is checked in to the official tree at xfree86.org. However, that driver only uses indirect rendering to render OpenGL, and so performance tends to be slow, because of the indirect rendering path. The folks at Utah-GLX were, at one point, working to make that driver part of XFree 4.0, and have direct rendering support, but since our binary drivers have been released, I think that their efforts sort of died off. In XFree86 4.0.x, that driver (named 'nv') is still part of the standard distribution, though it no longer contains OpenGL support, as far as I know.
