The Pentium 4 has an enormous die size. Die size is an expression of the area of silicon needed to fabricate a chip. The P4's die is over twice the size if the die used in chips like the PIII, Celeron and AMD Duron. Reportedly the Pentium 4 will sprawl over 217 square mm, compared to only about 100 square mm for the chips mentioned above. This means that Intel, already struggling with capacity concerns, will be able to get far fewer P4 chips out of each wafer compared to PIIIs and Celerons. Also, the yield rate (the percentage of good processors) goes down as die size increases, further driving up the costs of manufacturing the new CPU.
