I like the idea.
We should actually try to figure out a set of rules. I mean..... flame (it could be interesting), no flame? News, PC (personal computers), PC (politically correctness), politics? What else? Should it be considered "scuola e lavoro" regardless of the topic, since we are actually trying to improve our skills? What do the admins have to say about that? Cheers, M.

I can't speak a word of English. I 'xpect that means I'll have to piss off, dunnit? Before I do, may I delight you with a tad of Uncle James?
Once upon a time and a very good time it was there was a moocow coming down along the road and this moocow that was coming down along the road met a nicens little boy named baby tuckoo His father told him that story: his father looked at him through a glass: he had a hairy face. He was baby tuckoo. The moocow came down the road where Betty Byrne lived: she sold lemon platt.

'Course, learning to write in English can be useful, but the most important things to learn a language are:
- Understanding the spoken language -Understanding the words "between the lines" Even the last thing I wrote (between the lins) is a tipical italian form and translating it word by word probably wouldn't have the same meaning.... There are many verbal forms for each language and most of times they cannot be translated, just explained and used in their native language. By the way, how could you translate (e.g.) "raining cats and dogs" ??? Well, if we had to think about foreign visitors of this forum, we should always take care of using a simple language without complex forms -> and this is impossible, as many users (and people) doesn't even know his own language... I already started many days ago, my sign is ENG!

Ok, but it's an interpretation, not a translation

![]() "It's raining cats and dogs" is an idiomatic expression just as much as "Piove a catinelle" or "Vien giù che Dio la manda". In normal speech (I'm calling it like this for simplicity's sake), it is a perfectly acceptable translation where the intended meaning is fully conveyed. Now, what if the expression occurs in a literary text where etimology and the likes come into play? Were this the case, there could very well be a number of cross-references in the prototext which would go amiss in the metatext if the translator chose an acceptable translation rather than an adequate one (see Osimo, "Propedeutica della traduzione" for more on this issue). To make a long story short, there are no set rules to follow: the translation will depend on the context, the target audience and a number of other factors. But in the situation you mentioned, i.e. an idiomatic expression devoid of context, the translations I suggested are indisputable ![]()

Ok, I'll make an example then
![]() As I said before, taken out of context "Piove a catinelle" is an acceptable translation for "It's raining cats and dogs". Now, let's broaden things a bit. Take this passage, for instance: "Pioveva a catinelle e non si vedeva in giro un solo animale". You can tell that in this case it just doesn't make sense to translate the sentence with "It was raining cats and dogs and there wasn't a single animal about". If you do, you're creating a pun that is not there in the Italian original. You'll have to go for something more straightforward, like "It was bucketing down and there wasn't a single animal about".
