Gericom Blockbuster, Update WinXP SP1->SP2 incompatibile!!

Ho provato in tutti i modi ad installare lo SP2.
Ma tutte le volte si blocca tutto. Non aggiorna.

Ho provato a contattare la Gericom via e-mail, ma non rispondono.
Ho provato a usare l'helpdesk del sito, ma non rispondono.
Ho provato di tutto.

Ho provato a chiamare l'assistenza in Italia al numero verde, ma non rispondono. Oppure alzano la cornetta e la chiudono subito.

Ormai non sò più che fare. Un portatile di meno di 2 anni, anzi non ha ancora 1 anno e mezzo di vita. E non si può installare il SP2 che mi serve per alcune recenti applicazioni universitarie, ed anche per il lavoro, che funzionano solo via SP2.
Ed è un portatile che m'è costato più di 1600 euro!!

Ho provato a mandarlo in garanzia, mi dicono che non ha nulla che non và. E che non testano il SP2. (le offese che tirerei dietro a quei simpaticoni dell'assistenza...).

Come faccio ad installare il SP2 su questo gingillo?

Non ditemi "cambia laptop" perchè non trovo 2000 euro sotto l'albero di casa mia. Essì, per i materiali che mi servono su un laptop, integrati, dovrei spendere circa 1800 euro, 2000 se aggiungo un banco di ram da 150€ ed un floppy da 40€.

Si pensa che ho contattato Microsoft e mi hanno risposto che cercando sulle pagine della gericom il produttore del mio pc non hanno trovato soluzione e loro suppongono dipenda dal BIOS. Hmm... mi sà che non sarà molto rindondante la soluzione.

Non c'è riuscita la Gericom, e nemmeno un mio amico che tiene un laboratorio (e tiene un suo Gericom stesso modello). Nada.

Le Ram escludile, le ha sostituite con delle Kingstone.
Escludi DVD-Rom.
Escludi la sk video perchè lui tiene la 9600 Mobility mentre io la 9000, ed è lo stesso modello di portatile!!
Escludi la CPU perchè ha provato a mettere un Centrino PentiumM 1.4Ghz. Nada.
Il difetto stà o nel SW che non accetta la sk madre, o la sk madre che non viene accettata dal software!!

Ovviamente se altomax2 dicesse anche la sua sui problemi rivelati vedresti che sarebbero gli stessi
E' nato male questo PC, esattamente come l'FX51 dell'AMD

Ci credi che ho scritto su 12 forum stranieri e nessuno ha trovato 1 soluzione che sia una?

In ogni caso visto che cerchi aiuto evita di scrivere fesserie.
Sulla mobo di un nb per p4 non ci puoi sicuramente aver provato ad installare un centrino, tanto varrebbe dire di averci installato un a64.

Ti consiglio allora di leggerti queste distro. Leggiti le caratteristiche, gli zoccoletti dei primi Pentium M, non dei dothan però. MA di quelli prima dei Dothan, che detenevano lo stesso socket dei PIV FSB533 e FSB800 Northwood, di cui la tua CPU PIV è Northwood anche se non più specificato dalle distro Intel come HTT (Se intendi i Dothan ti dò ragione perchè hanno un altro socket, ma non sono esistiti solo i dothan).
E di chiedere ai modders come fanno a montare un Pentium M su un PC desktop per fare overclock estremi

E per la precisione ho tenuto Pentium M su motherboard per PIV desktop.

e mi spieghi i test che fanno nei vari Lab di overclocking sparsi per la rete ad inventarsi "un centrino overcloccato su una motherboard desktop per PIV".

La scheda madre della Gericom può supportare il centrino, ma non il Low Voltage di cui fa uso. Non parliamo poi del Low Low.

E ora vienimi pure a dire che anche gli AMD XP-M non si montano sui PC desktop, e gli XP normali non si montano sui Laptop perchè sennò mi metto a rotolare dalle risate.

La differenza finale tra i due processori riguarda l'utilizzo di socket differenti. Mentre il Pentium M è dotato di 479 pin, il vecchio modello di Pentium 4 utilizza un socket da 478 pin. Il numero dei pin praticamente quasi identico, è un chiaro fattore che indica che i due processori operano nello stesso modo.

Non c'è bisogno di aggiungere altro.
Ci sono degli adattatori che li rendono compatibili. E non solo per le Asus, dato che pure le Gigabyte le Abit ed altre moth li supportavano con gli adattatori.
Persino le MSI, e le chaintek.
Leggiti pure le distro, sono compatibili per quanto riguarda supporto di chipset.
Quella è la chiave. Poi le dentature le adatti. Ed i modi ci sono, altrimenti negozi come Fluctus o StargateSRL non avrebbero venduto al tempo i Pentium M per sostituire i PIV dai notebook o dai desktop.

Edit: tom's hardware non specifica in quello stesso articolo che anche la disposizione dei piedini è diversa? (altrimenti butto l'adattatore).

In quello stesso articolo specifica che l'adattatore rende impossibile usare dissipatori originali per p4 visto che solleva di quasi un centimetro il processore senza contare la necessita di un connettore di alimentazione che su di un notebook vedo difficile da reperire.
In piu' mi piacerebbe anche sapere dove poter trovare l'aggiornamento del bios per far riconoscere al nb il nuovo processore.
Non vedo quindi come si possano utilizzare questi adattatori su di un notebook sul gericom in particolare ma se tu ce l'hai fatta sono contento per te.
Piuttosto lasciando perdere i centrino visto che anche tu hai il mio stesso note sei mica riuscito a far andare a bassa velocita' la cpu anche con l'alimentazione elettrica, come quando va a batteria?

Puoi provare ad installare il bios della uniwill mod n251s6 che e' identico al gericom non so se poi riesci ad installare l'sp2 ma e' comunque piu' aggiornato dell'ultimo bios gericom.
Dopo l'operazione ho pero' dovuto contattare microsoft per l'attivazione del so perche' xp vede il cambio di bios come se tu avessi cambiato computer.

ragazzi anche se non credo interessi più a nessuno, sono riuscito ad installare windows xp + sp1 + sp2 e infine anche sp3 con tutti gli aggiornamenti ad oggi disponibili il tutto da zero, cioè formattando completamente... la soluzione l'ho trovata smanettandoci su una giornata buona

ho provato anche con windows xp legacy ma niente si blocca

Non e farina del mio sacco ma forse si puo capire qualcosa,

advent 7027 , gericom blockbaster 251s6 , e invwill 251s6 sono la stessa macchina con stesso bios .

poi ho trovato questo post che indica forse come fare a risolvere...se cè qualcuno che lo puo tradurre , sarebbe fantastico

This is by no means my own work, i found it somewhere else and unscrupulously stole it! (for the greater good)

Hi, I'm far from new to computers and I don't want to upset too many people
but I have a major disappointment (and that's trying to be humble) with SP2. It wont work on my gericom laptop (ADVENT 7027)

This is what I've found out so far concerning the issues with:
- boot failures
- lock-ups of system after re-boot
- AGPCPQ.SYS or AGP440.SYS freeze in safe-mode after install.
- UPDATE.SYS
- KB885626 FIX failure

1) First, I did what most users did. Update through Windows Update. Managed
to download SP2 after an eternity (2 days) Broadband connection 10Mbit on my
side...But I wasn't in a hurry.

2) Install, everything seems ok. Reboot. "Blue screen of death" for half a
millisecond and then autorestart. No safe-start, or any option makes system
available!!! I'm basically locked out! Reinstall (Many thanks to Imaging
Software!)

3) Update all drivers, update Bios. Download SP2 full file for IT
professionals and wait the 60 minuts it takes to reinstall SP2 (hugh)

4) Re-boot. Computer dead again! In safe mode however, I get a stop at file
AGPCPQ.SYS (just after AGP440.SYS) which to some might cause a "bling" since
it coincides with a previous problem in Windows2000. However, I enter NTFSDos
and remove the files for fun, this time process freezes at another file than
the ones listed above. So thus, it is not an AGP drive issue like Microsoft
Support throws in your face. I have updated the AGP to the very latest (and
they are new). SIS645dx version 1.17e and also graphic card.

5) Check support and get info on kb885626 Prescot computers. Verify with
Intel Frequency ID Utility what processor I have. It reads Family: F, not a
Prescot, but a Northwood - thus it is in the range of processors affected of
the known issue with microcoding. Info is given to update BIOS or run the
FIX. I do the latter since there is no newer fix than I already have.

6) Restart after install of the fix (SP2 yet not installed!) and after 30-60
seconds system freezes completely. Please note SP2 not installed and this is
the fix that causes the problem with freeze! The same fix that is supposed to
fix the install of SP2. Well, thank you! I'm not very positive about the
outcome...

7) Restart in safe mode and it works ok though. I then decide to, what the
heck...

Install SP2 - Reboot. Works ok, for about 30-60 seconds, then it's dead
again, just like with the fix. But Halleluja. The SP2 installed this time and
reboot works!! Safe-mode is ok and does not freeze up like normal mode. Good,
now I can play.

9) I get pe:d off and check the system files and do some real-playing around
since MICROSOFT Support for SP2 does not offer any helpful advice and knows
less than what I've figured out so far (have you updated your drives,
unplugged usb's, bios updated, checked that the power-chord is plugged in
(!??!) - Well, yes I have. And raindance and running around computer
clock-wise three times. Erhh... let me get back on the issue they say.
Haven't heard from them)

10) I decide to do exactly what the KB885626 says I shouldn't do. I make a
copy of the UPDATE.SYS from my original XP SP1a installation and save it.
Then I do another (about the 10th installation of SP2) after the KB885626 fix
that causes my computer to freeze after install. Then I rename the SP2 203 kb
UPDATE.SYS and replace it with UPDATE.SYS (SP1a file - about 130kB). Double
Halleluja. It works. NO freezes, NO lock-ups, NO problems... so far.

Now to questions for you who made it through this post so far:
- KB885626 does not work as it should! Faulty Fix for my type of processor?
Not Prescot, but Northwood?
- SP2 writes some bad code into UPDATE.SYS that causes processor to fail -
is this needed in the file?
- UPDATE.SYS - what does it do? Why does this file lock up my system, and
without it, it works ok? Is it really that needed???
- How come Microsoft says to us victims out there: Update your BIOS:es. It's
not really our fault. If 20 motherboard manufacturors suddenly have to sit
down and write BIOS codes for computers they don't even sell anymore, what
kind of attack on this issue is that when it is an SP2 issue!!
- And no, I don't sit on a crap computer. It is a laptop, top of the art 10
months ago, and I can still play Far Cry on it. With laptops you have other
issues as well - trying to find drives. I can't just unplug a device that
easy or update a funky processor to check with another.

So please all SP2 worshipers out there. There are issues with SP2. Full
stop. It has not been Beta tested properly and several IT consultants are
warning for issues of more than 10% of computer installations going funky.

And please, Mr Microsoft. It's time to fix the issue properly (FIX for the
885626fix or whatever). In this case the unsupported processors...

My Info:
- OS: Tried on XP Home, XP Pro, XP PRO Slipstreamed SP2. (slipstreamed
freezes at installing devices (33 minutes reamining!) KB885626 not slipped or
run into the installation disk, so it explains...
- All tests on clean install (no antivirus, no other software, even without
firewalls- Nada!)
- Test has been made with standard drivers, complete update of drivers and
even BIOS update (newest available on the market at this moment about 5
months old!)
- It has been tested with Windows Update and downloaded as an independent
SP2 file.

Computer:
- Gericom Laptop 3.06 GHz, 512MB
- ATI 9000 Mobility Radeon
- WLAN SIS
- HD Toshiba MK4025GAS
- Mat****a UJ-815A
- Smart Link modem

forse ci sono riuscito a montare i sp2
come a suggerito nel post in inglese:
tutto sta nel file update.sys il quale contiene il microcodice che "identifica il microprocessore "

una volta aggiornato la scheda video con driver nuovi procedere in questo modo

fare una copia di update.sys e metterla in una cartella a vosta scelta

installare la vostra patch kb8...... x il microprocessore
riavviare in modalita provvisoria e sostituire update.sys (del sp2 203kb) con quello della sp1 salvato prima. riavviate
vedrete che il pc non si blocca.

ora lanciate il sp2 , lasciatelo adare a fine installazione , quando vi chiede di riavvare , boostrappate in modalita provvisoria e ricopate update.sys del sp1 al posto del update.sys del sp2 (203kb), dopo di che riavviate.

In questo modo a mè sè installato !!!!! il sp2

ora sto cercado di trovare un programma che mi dia la possibilita di editare il microcodice di update.sys
da quello che ho potuto capire contiene delle informazioni riguardante i vari microprocessori intel e il microcodice da utilizzare con essi.
probabilmente la combinata della nostra cpu + chipset e stata tolta nel file update.sys del sp2 e quindi non riesce ad abbinare il giusto microcodice alla cpu che montiamo.

se qualcuno conosce meglio il funzionamento di update.sys e pregato di farsi avanti e d'arci una mano....
