Controversial seal hunt under way off Newfoundland

More than 12,000 sealers are on the massive ice floes off the coast of Newfoundland and Labrador Monday to begin the busiest stretch of the largest seal hunt in more than 50 years.

Despite rage and protest from animal-rights groups around the world, the controversial harp seal hunt in Atlantic Canada has begun – with more than 300,000 seals expected to be killed this hunting season. As many as 140,000 seals will be killed by Tuesday.

In February of 2003, the Ministry of Fisheries and Oceans unveiled a new Atlantic seal-hunt management plan that set the harp seal total allowable catch (TAC) at 975,000 over three years with an annual TAC of up to 350,000 in any two years.

While animal-welfare groups have called the hunt brutal, federal and provincial governments say the cull is vital for the local economy and good for replenishing depleted cod stocks.

"These are the first dollars of the year, so its pretty valuable in terms of paying some bills and being the first bit of economic activity in the course of the year," Earle McCurdy, president of the Fish, Food and Allied Workers Union (FFAW/CAW) which represents more than 20,000 workers throughout Newfoundland and Labrador, told globeandmail.com on Monday.

"It is a significant income opportunity for our members — almost all of the sealers are fisherman as well."

Harp seals are the most populous of the seal species on the Atlantic coast and are the major species hunted for commercial purposes. The federal government says the North Atlantic harp seal population is healthy and abundant – 5.2 million compared to 1.8 million in 1970.

Those figures have not stopped animal rights groups from trying to sway public opinion on the hunt.

A full-page ad in The New York Times last week by the Humane Society of the United States condemned the hunt and accused Canada of permitting the clubbing of baby seals. It also suggested that those who wish to stop the hunt contact Prime Minister Paul Martin.

The International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) has representatives documenting this year's hunt, both from the air and on the ice.

According to the IFAW website, the group has submitted video evidence of more than 660 probable violations of Canada's Marine Mammal Regulations – including the skinning of live seals — to the Department of Fisheries and Oceans. No charges have been laid in response.

As part of its campaign, the U.S. Humane Society has also called on Americans to stop spending their tourism dollars in Canada.

Mr. McCurdy called the campaigns shortsighted and belittling, noting that the only difference between the seal hunt and other animal harvests is that the seal hunt happens in full public view.

"Chicken-processing facilities and slaughterhouses are private property, so you never see what goes on," he said. "This is very much an urban thing. For someone in a city, food is something that comes in a cellophane package and the dirty work and unpleasant stuff is done. People who grow up in farming or hunting or fishing environments know the difference."

"The process of getting food to the retail stores involves a lot of hard work and some of it is not the most pleasant work."

Greenpeace, traditionally a vocal opponent of the hunt, is not campaigning against the cull this year. Instead the organization is focusing on issues like genetically modified foods and climate change.

"I think that's partly because of some recognition on the impact on recovery of cod stocks and the importance the hunt has to fishing communities," Mr. McCurdy said. "But it (groups campaigning against the hunt) is probably something we'll always have to endure because people seem to be able to make a dollar from it."

Since the European ban on importing white pelts in 1983, the Canadian government imposed tougher regulations, barring hunters from skinning seal pups alive. The hunting of harp seal pups and blueback seals, was banned. Hunters must now wait at least 12 days after the birth of a pup when they begin shedding their white coats before they can be killed.

According to the IFAW, 95 per cent of the seals killed in the hunt are under three months of age.

The prices for the pelts began to rise in the mid-1990s and reached record levels in the past two years, generating more than $20-million in 2002.

a parte che prorpio nn capisco ste persone come fanno a essere cosi' freddi....ma cazzo nn possono almeno sparare con na pistola????????
ho visto su un servizio che per far presto spesso asportano i genitali dell'animale di brutto col coltello a bestia viva e la lasciano morire dissanguata e di dolore!!!!!!
veramente nn trovo ragione di cio' ,questi li prenderei e li brucerei vivi in centrale per fare corrente elettrica col recupero termico!!!!!!!!!!!!

gia', e' questo l'alto ideale che li spinge ad agire in questo modo... il fatto della pelliccia che potrebbe rovinarsi!
Fra l'altro oggi al tg facevano notare ancora di piu' l'assurdita', ovvero il fatto che tutto cio' che derivera' dalla lavorazione di quelle povere foche "legalmente" uccise, tipo ad es. il famoso grasso, e' stato bandito praticamente come prodotto su tutta la piazza mondiale proprio per la sua provenienza (un po' come per l'avorio, per capirsi), per cui si ricorrera' addirittura al contrabbando per venderlo... mah, senza parole, davvero
