Mike Portnoy lascia i Dream Theater

I am about to write something I never imagined I'd ever write:

After 25 years, I have decided to leave Dream Theater....the band I founded, led and truly loved for a quarter of a century.

To many people this will come as a complete shock, and will also likely be misunderstood by some, but please believe me that it is not a hasty decision...it is something I have struggled with for the last year or so....

After having had such amazing experiences playing with Hail, Transatlantic and Avenged Sevenfold this past year, I have sadly come to the conclusion that I have recently had more fun and better personal relations with these other projects than I have for a while now in Dream Theater...

Please don't misinterpret me, I love the DT guys dearly and have a long history, friendship and bond that runs incredibly deep with them...it's just that I think we are in serious need of a little break...

Dream Theater was always my baby...and I nurtured that baby every single day and waking moment of my life since 1985...24/7, 365...never taking time off from DT's never-ending responsibilites (even when the band was "off" between cycles)...working overtime and way beyond the call of duty that most sane people ever would do for a band...

But I've come to the conclusion that the DT machine was starting to burn me out...and I really needed a break from the band in order to save my relationship with the other members and keep my DT spirit hungry and inspired.

We have been on an endless write/record/tour cycle for almost 20 years now (of which I have overseen EVERY aspect without a break) and while a few months apart from each other here & there over the years has been much needed and helpful, I honestly hoped the band could simply agree with me to taking a bit of a "hiatus" to recharge our batteries and "save me from ourselves"...

Sadly, in discussing this with the guys, they determined they do not share my feelings and have decided to continue without me rather than take a breather...I even offered to do some occasional work throughout 2011 against my initial wishes, but it was not to be...

While it truly hurts for me to even think of a Dream Theater without Mike Portnoy (hell, my father named the band!!), I do not want to stand in their way...so I have decided to sacrifice myself and simply leave the band so as to not hold them back against their wishes....

Strangely enough, I just read an interview that I recently did that asked me about the future of DT and I talked about "always following your heart and being true to yourself"...sadly I must say that at this particular moment, my heart is not with Dream Theater...and I would simply be "going through the motions", and would honestly NOT be true to myself if I stayed for the sake of obligation without taking the break I felt I needed.

I wish the guys the best and hope the music and legacy we created together is enjoyed by fans for decades to come...I am proud of every album we made, every song we wrote and every show we played....

I'm sorry to all the disappointed DT fans around the world...I really tried to salvage the situation and make it work...I honestly just wanted a break (not a split)...but happiness cannot be forced, it needs to come from within....

You DT fans are the greatest fans in the world and as you all know, I have always busted my ass for you guys and I hope that you will stay with me on my future musical journey, wherever it may lead me....(and as you all know my work ethic, there will surely be no shortage of future MP projects!)

Dopo le fantastiche esperienze con HAIL!, TRANSATLANTIC e AVENGED SEVENFOLD nell'ultimo anno, sono tristemente giunto alla conclusione che mi sono divertito maggiormente e ho avuto migliori esperienze personali di quanto io abbia avuto, da un bel po' di tempo, nei DREAM THEATER.

Non fraintendetemi, amo i ragazzi dei DREAM THEATER e ho un legame profondo con loro che dura da anni... penso solo che abbiamo bisogno di un break.

I DREAM THEATER sono sempre stati come un figlio, che ho nutrito ogni singolo giorno della mia vita dal 1985... 24 ore al giorno, 7 giorni su 7, 365 giorni l'anno... senza mai staccarmi dalle infinite responsabilità che ne derivano, anche nei periodi 'off'... lavorando per il gruppo molto più di quanto avrebbe mai fatto una persona sana di mente.

Ma sono giunto alla conclusione che la macchina DREAM THEATER cominciava a bruciarmi... e che ho davvero bisogno di una pausa per salvare la mia relazione con gli altri componenti del gruppo e mantenere il mio spirito DREAM THEATER affamato e ispirato.

Sono 20 anni che non interrompiamo il ciclo scrittura/disco/tour (dei quali ho supervisionato OGNI aspetto senza mai una pausa, e anche se qualche mese lontano dagli altri durante gli anni è stato d'aiuto, ho sperato che che la band avesse potuto esser d'accordo nel prendere una piccola pausa e ricaricare le batterie...

Tristemente, parlando coi ragazzi, è emerso che non condividono la mia opinione, hanno deciso quindi di continuare senza di me piuttosto che farmi respirare. Mi sono anche offerto di partecipare occasionalmente agli impegni della band durante il 2011, ma non ne hanno voluto sapere...

Anche se mi fa davvero male pensare i DREAM THEATER senza Mike Portnoy (cazzo, mio padre ha dato il nome alla band!!), non ho voluto impuntare i piedi... così ho deciso di sacrificare me stesso e lasciare semplicemente il gruppo.

Straamente ho da poco letto un intervista dove mi si chiedeva del futuro dei DREAM THEATER, e io ho parlato di 'seguire sempre il proprio cuore e rimanere coerenti a se stessi'... Tristemente in questo momento il mio cuore non è coi DREAM THEATER... non sarei coerente con me stesso se mi prendessi l'obbligo di restare senza la pausa di cui sento di aver bisogno.

Auguro il meglio ai ragazzi e spero che l'eredità musicale che abbiamo lasciato sia ispirazione per i fan nei decenni avvenire... Sono fiero di ogni album che abbiamo fatto, di ogni canzone che abbiamo scritto e di ogni show che abbiamo suonato...

Sono dispiaciuto verso tutti i fan dei DREAM THEATER nel mondo... giuro di aver tentato di salvare la situazione e di far si che funzionasse... volevo solo una pausa non una rottura... ma la felicità non può essere forzata, deve venire da dentro.

la band dei DT ha già fatto sapere che continuerà il loro lavoro e il nuovo cd uscirà a gennaio 2011 al quale seguirà un tour mondiale, anche se sono mtolo dispiaciuto potrebbe essere un modo per i DT di riprendersi dopo un lungo stallo..

Sinceramente mi sarei aspettato che dei fondatori a mollare sarebbe stato Myung, invece....comunque sia, sicuramente il cambio di Portnoy porterà inevitabilmente un cambio di stile da parte dei DT, anche se hanno confermato il solito andazzo album/tour; comunque detta così è una carognata, se una band è veramente affiatata e un membro ha bisogno di una pausa si fermano tutti!! E, a parte il tweet di Rudess, su tutti gli altri siti non c'è altro che il comunicato ufficiale di risposta dei DT, che freddezza...su questo sono molto deluso.

EDIT: sicuramente il prossimo album dei DT sarà il loro album più atteso dopo Awake

Sono sorpreso, ma non dalla notizia in se stessa, ma da quello che stavo pensando due sere fa leggendo le date del tour degli Avenged Sevenfold.. "cazz ma il loro tour va avanti fino a Marzo 2011, come farà Mike??"

Mah, i DT hanno perso un pezzo importante già in passato (Kevin Moore), vedremo cosa faranno.. certo però che se Mike aveva bisogno di un break anche gli altri potevano aspettarlo o meglio potevano prendersi un break e rinfrescarsi le idee..

Magari a distanza di qualche anno tornerà, visto che è da sempre con Petrucci la colonna portante dei DT.

Sì infatti, errore mio, comunque stanotte Petrucci sul suo forum ha fatto un botta e risposta abbastanza lungo ecco le Q&A:

Q: Do you have anyone as of right now to fill MP's spot as a drummer?

A:No, not yet. This all went down yesterday.

Q:Wow. So was this out of the blue for you guys too or have you been weighing the options over the past while?

A: Shocking.
No one ever anticipated Mike leaving.
I love him and personally think it's a mistake but he's his own man.

A:We have a manager that has always handled the band's affairs. Mike was excellent at promoting the band and making public appearances as well as communicating with our fans. We will have to step it up to match all he did.

A: Our method of writing wont change. It's hard to say.

Q:Are you still just as happy with the Mark V's, or do you still like going back to your Mark IIC+'s?

A:They are all awesome. The Mark V is a monster and I will definitely use it in the studio.

I was wondering if the revolving setlists for the shows would remain? I know MP kept track of that stuff and i was wondering if that was going to change.

Now that MP is gone are you guys producing the album yourself or are you thinking about hiring an outside producer?

A:We haven't decided.

Q:Last question, I promise. Do you foresee a stylistic change with the forthcoming album? Many fans are speculating that Mike had a large role to play in the recent shift towards a more modern metal sound.

A:It's not predetermined. It happens organically when we write together. I'd rather not speculate because I've always had a passion for playing heavy music. We'll have to see what happens in the studio.

Q:Without going into too many details, how did the Mike tell you he was finished?

A:He was a gentleman.

Are you intimidated at all going into writing a new album without mikes creative input?

Probabile che essendo in tour con gli a7x, che sono giovani in cima alle classifiche e fanno sold out ovunque, si sia fatto prendere un po' la mano...una crisi di mezz'età sembrerebbe.
