Avviare l'ambiente grafico su kubuntu

Ciao a tutti,
oggi dopo innumerevoli letture di guide su questo forum mi sono deciso a provare Kubuntu 6.10.
L'installazione e' andata bene, al riavvio parte grub che mi chiede cosa voglio avviare, scelgo Kubuntu,arriva a linea di comando dove mi chiede nome utente e password,le inserisco correttamente e poi si ferma sempre su linea di comando con il mio nome utente.
Adesso cosa devo fare per far partire l'ambiente grafico (che dovrebbe essere kde)?

Da root prova a digitare startx o kdm.

allora provando a digitare startx mi viene fuori questo errore

mentre kdm lo prende solo da root ed io sinceramente sono nuovo dell'ambiente linux e non so ancora come loggarmi da root.

dai il comando

sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg

così riconfigurerai il server x e hai buone probabilità che funzioni. una volta fatto questo riavvia il pc con

sudo reboot

e se è andato tutto bene dovrebbe partirti direttamente in modalità grafica.
altrimenti se non va dai il comando

sudo nano /etc/X11/xorg.conf (attento alle maiuscole)

e dacci info sul tuo hardware così vediamo cosa si può fare...

intanto ti ringrazio della risposta.
Allora per quanto riguarda il primo problema ho risolto (con non poca fatca a dire la verita) era la scheda video che dava problemi,una ati x700, ho impostato il driver vesa al posto di quello ati ed e' partito, poi una volta avviato dal kde ho installato il suo driver ed e' andato tutto bene, solo che ora ho altri due problemi.
Il primo e' l'audio un realtek alc 850 integrata sulla scheda madre,per quel poco che mi e' sembrato di capire il chip dovrebbe averlo riconosciuto,almeno da questa schermata

ma non viene emesso nessun suono e non riesco a venirne a capo.
Invece il mouse, un intellimouse a 5 pulsanti, viene visto a tre pulsanti (anche se in fase di installazione mi aveva riconosciuto il modello esatto)ed i 2 pulsanti laterali non vanno.

se ci fai caso nella sezione relativa al suono sulla riga synth.... c'è scritto not enabled in config. quindi probabilmente è disabilitato da qualche parte... ora però non so dirti dove guardare per vedere come abilitarlo...
