The preliminary engineering and design considerations for a lunar-based SRS factory were considered at length in a recent NASA study [5,9]. This study concluded that the development of a fully-automated self-replicating growing factory module with 100% "closure" (i.e., full independence in materials, energy, and information that might be supplied from Earth) could be achieved in twenty years if pursued on a crash-programme basis. The strawman system was keyed to element abundances in the lunar regolith, but for the purposes of the present work the specific composition of the planetary substrate is insignificant in terms of its effects on basic SRSperformance characteristics, The minimum mass for a self-replicating machine system was not determined but the baseline design was thought to be near the region of nonlinear scaling, requiring drastic redesign for downsizing to lower masses. For purposes of the present work, the NASA figures for the baseline SRS "seed" configuration are adopted as follows: Mass, 100 tons; power, 1 MW; replication time, 1 year; circular radius, 50 metres; and operating temperatures, 173-373°K.
In the NASA study it was suggested, but not proven, that any self-replicating machine system having 100% closure can be used to upgrade itself to the level of a general product factory. A general product factory is one which can be instructed to manufacture anything which is physically possible to make. Such a system is the physical realisation of von Neumann's universal constructor automation, which can construct anything constructable, given an adequate substrate and the rules of operation of his artificial cell space universe. That any physical SRS with full closure is inherently a general product factory is implicit in von Neumann's work, but has not yet been proven rigorously by automata theorists. However, in the present work it is assumed that each SRS seed and offspring may be regarded as general product factories.

As for productivity, if T is elapsed time in years, N is the number of seed units or seed mass-equivalents generated during T, and P is the total productivity of the SRS field in tons/year, then for simple doubling growth T = 1 + log2 N if each unit works only on completing its own replica, assuming a 1-year replication time. The fastest theoretical growth rate, assumed throughout this paper, is achieved when all available machines contribute directly to the replication of the next replica, in which case T = 1 + 1/2 + ... + 1/N. In either case, P = 100 N tons/year. During the growth phase, this production is entirely diverted to the replication of factory facilities; during the subsequent production phase, the entire factory complex output is diverted to the specific terraforming tasks required. Ho letto, molto interessante. peccato che con i miei 17anni sono troppo vecchio per vedere un giorno marte colonizzato, magari quadno avrò figli e nipoti, loro potranno godersi questo spettacolo!

Other opportunities to communicate with Beagle 2, including pre-programmed sessions with Mars Express, are listed on the Beagle 2 website.

Meanwhile, earlier today, ESA's Mars Express orbiter was successfully inserted into a polar orbit around the Red Planet. This manoeuvre means that Mars Express will be ideally placed to communicate with Beagle 2 when it passes over the landing site in Isidis Planitia in a few days' time.

The next Beagle 2 press briefing is scheduled to take place at the Media Centre in Camden on Sunday 4th January. Details will be confirmed on the websites at a later date.

A window of opportunity for contacting Beagle 2 was open this morning and whilst Odyssey was trying to establish contact with the lander, the Deep Space Network of telescopes back on Earth were busy involved in communication links for NASA's Mars Exploration Rover and Stardust projects, hence the delay in receiving any information back about today's attempt to contact Beagle 2.

Scientists took the opportunity this morning to upload another command to Beagle 2 to try to reset its internal clock. This time however the instructions were embedded in the "hail" command. This is designed to initiate the contact sequence with Beagle 2 and doesn't require a response from the lander to confirm the data have been received. No initial result was achieved during this pass of Odyssey but it is hoped that the command may bring success in a future communication slot.

The next opportunity for retrieval of a signal from Beagle 2 will be with Mars Express in the New Year, the date and time of which are to be confirmed.

The next Beagle 2 press briefing is scheduled to take place at the Media Centre in Camden on Sunday 4th January. Details will be confirmed on the websites at a later date.

Adding his congratulations, Mark Sims said, "I'd like to reiterate the international cooperation we've been getting in terms of looking for Beagle. In particular, the JPL team which has been working very strange hours supporting the Odyssey passes, Lockheed Martin, who've been running the Odyssey spacecraft, Jodrell Bank, Westerborg, the British Astronomical Association and Malin Space Science Systems. Mike Malin is looking at imaging the landing site potentially from tomorrow."

Meanwhile, the search for Beagle 2 goes on.

"We haven't in any shape or form given up on Beagle 2," said Professor Pillinger.

"We have realised that Mars Express is not in the orbit we originally expected, so our communication strategy is now different from the one that we explained at the beginning of last week."

Describing the ongoing work at the Lander Operations Control Centre, Mark Sims explained that teams from the University of Leicester, SciSys and Astrium are continuing their efforts to identify possible failure modes that can be addressed.

"We're still concentrating on both the communications and timing/software issues, and working our way through the logic and fault tree on the basis that Beagle 2 is on the surface of Mars and for some reason is failing to talk to us," said Dr. Sims.

"There are six or seven scenarios that we're still working through and we still can't eliminate any of those."

However, possible failure scenarios involving a reset of the clock hardware and a problem with a tilted antenna seem to have been ruled out. Today's successful transmission of signals from the Spirit rover via Mars Odyssey also indicates that the radio on board NASA's orbiter is working properly.

Meanwhile, an attempt to send blind commands to Beagle 2 via Mars Odyssey on 31st December also resulted in no obvious response from the lander.

There has also been no response from the Beagle 2 transceiver during 11 programmed passes. Unfortunately, the last four contact opportunities pre-programmed into Beagle 2's computer no longer coincide with Mars Express on its current orbit, so the team is now relying on the spacecraft switching to various back-up communication modes.

The mission team is now waiting for their little lander to switch to one of its backup communication modes. Beagle 2 could already be operating in 'communication search mode 1', during which it listens for 80 minutes during both the Martian day and night in an effort to establish contact with an available orbiter at Mars Odyssey overflight times.

If no link is established by this method, 'communication search mode 2' should eventually be activated. The earliest date by which this mode could become operational was 3rd January. In this mode, the receiver is on for 59 minutes out of every hour throughout the Martian day, and the spacecraft sends a carrier signal five times in each daylight hour. During the Martian night, Beagle 2's receiver will be on for one minute out of every five, but there is no carrier signal.

Although Mars Odyssey will continue to search for the lander, Mars Express will soon become the prime communication link with Beagle 2. After reaching its operational polar orbit today, ESA's orbiter should pass over the Beagle 2 landing site regularly from 7th January onwards. Various modes of communication can be attempted during passes by Mars Express, although the team anticipates starting on 7th and 8th January with the standard 'hail and command' which has been used with Mars Odyssey.

The first four passes with Mars Express (7th, 8th, 9th and 10th January) are almost directly over the landing site and only 5 to 8 minutes long, so they are not ideal for communication, whereas the opportunities on 12th and 14th January are potentially much longer.
