Will the 'B' sec McLaren help the team in 2004?

Kimi Raikkonen said in Montreal Thursday that he is confident the recently tested McLaren MP4-19B machine will make its debut in next month's French Grand Prix.

The British team was forced to make major changes to their current car - the MP4-19 - after a disastrous start to the season saw them tumble from their pre-season status as championship challengers.

They have scored just five points in seven races so far with last year's world championship runner-up Raikkonen retiring from five and Scot David Coulthard posting the team's best result with sixth place in Malaysia.

Raikkonen tested the updated car at Silverstone last week and said that, while the team are unable to run it here this weekend or in the United States next week, they should be able to race with it on their return to Europe.

"We didn't have any problems and it felt good so hopefully once we go to Europe we take it to the races," said Raikkonen. "I think that all depends on how quickly we can get all the spare parts."

"It was nice to drive the 19B and the only small problem we had was because of the tight schedule with new parts. We really didn't have the right parts, so sometimes there was a problem with the cooling of the brakes."

"It's after only one test at Silverstone, so you don't really want to expect, but from the first laps the car already felt a bit better so hopefully we will get it to races soon."

Raikkonen will be back behind the wheel of the 'old' MP4-19 machine here at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve on Friday and is confident the team have solved the engine problems that prevented him from finishing the last race at the Nurburgring.

He has suffered four race-ending engine failures this season while two further problems put him to the back of the grid in San Marino and Spain after the team were forced to change his engine. But he refused to blame Mercedes for the difficulties and, after stating his determination to remain positive, he took a swipe at rival Michael Schumacher, who threw his helmet down in the garage after failing to finish in Monaco.

"It's disappointing when we have bad races but I don't think it helps when you shout and throw your helmet and kick your stuff," said Raikkonen. "But people are different - some like to show it and some not. Maybe this is my way."

McLaren have failed to get either car to the finish in the last two races, with engine failures accounting for three of the four retirements and a crash in Monaco for Coulthard the cause of the fourth. But Raikkonen is confident the new car, which has taken design aspects from the current cars of world champions Ferrari and rivals Renault, will herald the return to form of the team.

"So far it has been a very difficult season for me and the whole team and we are just trying to work harder and turn things around. Hopefully with 19B we can start fighting for podiums and hopefully also for wins."
