Geforce GTX 280M and 260M to launch at Cebit
Written by Fuad Abazovic Tuesday, 24 February 2009 11:57 GTS160 as well Nvidia plans to launch a new generation of discrete mobile cards and it is pretty confident that it can take the performance lead. Two new GTX 280M and 260M are based on the G92b 55nm chip and they bring a few cool things, such as 256-bit memory support and up to 128 stream units to notebook market. Nvidia expects that the new chip will be as much as 30 percent faster than Mobility Radeon HD 4870 and significantly faster than 9800 GTX M. GTX 280M should outperform Mobility Radeon HD 4870 and Nvidia believes that ATI uses just graphics while Nvidia has graphics+, GTX 260M is challenging Mobility Radeon 4850, while Geforce GTS 160M is going after Mobility Radeon HD 4670. |

GTS 240 in April might be strategic
Written by Fuad Abazovic Tuesday, 24 February 2009 11:46 Not at Cebit Geforce GTS 240, a G92b 55nm based chip that is a higher clocked version of the Geforce 9800GT, will come in April and we already wrote about it here. This is what Nvidia has decided and there won’t be any Geforce GTS 240 at Cebit, at least Nvidia won’t be happy if someone shows it. The Geforce GTS 250 on the other hand, will launch on the first day or Cebit and we still don’t know the price or the real performance of GTS 250 or 240. We are quite sure that GTS 250 should finally be able to beat Radeon 4850 on the performance level, but we are also sure that the GTS240 will end up slower. Nvidia might wait for the RV740 to launch before it releases the Geforce GTS 240. The whole point is to get the GTX 240 faster than ATI's RV740. With this in mind, this looks rather like a strategic decision, rather than a logistical one, and we will keep our eyes opened. As long as Geforce GTS 240 outperforms the 40nm based RV740, Nvidia will have a winning hand, but this is yet to be seen. |

Nvidia to launch Geforce GTS250 at Cebit
Written by Fuad Abazovic Tuesday, 24 February 2009 11:13 GTS 240 comes later Nvidia plans to launch a “new” card at Cebit and despite the slightly higher clock, we are talking about good old G92b chip in disguise. The new card, branded Geforce GTS 250, is a higher clocked G92b at 55nm and will basically be an overclocked Geforce 9800 GTX+. Geforce GTS 240 will come later. Nvidia wants this transition to go as smoothly as possible, and it doesn’t want partners to be sending the cards to the press, as the press will probably make a lot of noise about yet another Nvidia rebrand. The card will simply sell better in retail chains, where non-educated users like to make there upgrades and Nvidia wants to silently get rid of 9x00 branding and completely change it with the new GTx2x0 branding model. This is just a start and it will be interesting to see the brand for new cards such as GT21x 40nm parts. |

GT218 40nm should come in April
Written by Fuad Abazovic Tuesday, 24 February 2009 11:14 If it doesn’t slip Nvidia's first 40nm chip might be coming in April of this year. We are talking about the Geforce 9500GT replacement and this is the chip that is meant for OEMs and the low-end market. Nvidia traditionally starts its transition to a smaller manufacturing process in this market, as its less complicated, less risky and once it gets the smaller manufacturing process stable, then it can transition mainstream, and ultimately, performance and high end chips to the new process. The 40nm process is a full node, and is not an optical shrink, which makes things a bit more complicated then with an optical shrink, but 40nm should also bring lower power consumption and higher clocks. Nvidia has many 40nm chips aligned for this year and ultimately even DirectX 11 in 40nm should be available sometime late this year. We are not aware of GT218 architecture details, but we know that it is almost done. |

Geforce GTX 280M up to 50 percent faster than 9800M
Written by Fuad Abazovic Thursday, 26 February 2009 11:24 128 Cuda processor cores Nvidia’s soon to launch flagship notebook GPU is, as we said, based on G92b 55nm architecture. The high-end version new notebook chip branded as Geforce GTX 280M will come with 128 Cuda processor cores, or something that we used to call shader cores, or simply shaders. The chip works at 585MHz, while the shaders work at 1463MHz. It uses a 256-bit memory interface and has 1GB of GDDR3 memory working on 950MHz. the card is capable of 562 Gigaflops calculations and it supports PhysX, SLI and Hybrid SLI. GTX 280M should be at least 20 percent faster than Nvidia's current mobile flagship Geforce 9800M GTX, and in some games it will be even 50 percent faster. In Crysis the new GTX 280M should be more than 50 percent faster, and you should see similar performance data from Call of Duty: World at War and just slightly over 50 percent in Crysis Warhead, World in Conflict and Mirror's Edge. Of course Nvidia again voices its support for Cuda and Graphics plus. This GPU should be launched on Tuesday, March 3rd, along with with GTX 260M and GTS 160M GPUs. |
