CES 2009: The big fight

A high ranking Nvidia executive is confident that Nvidia will win with its next generation graphics. We are of course talking about 40nm chips and Nvidia feels good now with 55nm GT200 and things are looking better for the company.

Nvidia learned from its mistakes and it is avid to win against ATI’s next generation 40nm products. It still believes that big monolithic chips are the way to go and the safety net, as we mentioned before, is the fact it can always put two together and launch a dual GPU card.

Nvidia has to win as it doesn’t know how to run as a graphics underdog, but at the same time ATI likes the smell of RV770 victory and it will do its best to beat Nvidia. The new chips are expected in Q2 2009, but keep in mind, Nvidia executives have to believe in their company's plans, it's part of their job.

DirectX 11 cards in late 2009

The usual suspects

DirectX 11 is a feature of Windows 7 and the cards might actually come a few months before this OS ships. Nvidia and ATI are working on their DirectX 11 cards and some smaller players such as S3 should also be ready in late 2009.

The launch of DirectX 11 hardware will have to depend of the Windows 7 launch, but we hear that Nvidia’s second generation 40nm card and chip that some call GT300, which again is a 40nm chip, will come with DirectX 11 support.

The games, as we said before, are expected in 2010, and we expect at least some Xmas 2010 games worth buying to be DirectX 11 titles. The recession is going to hit computer graphics guys massively, but in such times innovation might drive more sales, so the new chip breakthrough will continue and DirectX 11 is the next major one.

le speranze di poter arrivare a prendere le dx11 al prossimo cambio scheda aumentano sempre di più..

io voglio proprio vedere che combinano con i 40nani, le gddr5 ecc alla nvidia

fra di loro poco. ma per gli uni i 384 shader per gli altri ram a oltre 5 giga(c'è chi dice sei).

Per che periodo è previsto l'arrivo delle schede con DX11?

CES 2009: DirectX 10, 40nm and DX11


We've learned that Nvidia plans two chips for its high end roadmap of 2009. The first one is 40nm GT200 derived chip and the big rumour surrounding it is that this chip will be sort of an optical shrink of the existing GT200.

This would mean that the spec would not change, but that the transistors would get smaller, and so would the TDP and the chip itself, but at the same time 40nm is not an optical shrink process. Nvidia has to develop the chip for it, not just optically shrink it, which dramatically complicates things.

We expect that the new GT200 derived 40nm product will have at least a few more clusters, shaders, TMUs and ROPs, naturally all at higher clocks.

The second chip that should be with us in late 2009 is a DirectX 11 part. Nvidia needs it more than ATI, as it decided to skip DirectX 10.1 and all of its advantages. This chip is rumoured to be based on a new architecture that some call GT300, and we decide to call it Geforce 11, but we have only a few sketchy details about it, DirectX 11 support being the major one.

cmq vabbè a sto punto o mi piglio una EVGA liscia o aspetto definitivamente altre novità, deciderò

sti bastardacci di XFX mica mi rispondono gli ho mandato 5 mail...basterebbe anche che mi dicessero "we don't have in plan a 55nm 260 GTX BE version" almeno mi metterei il cuore in pace...
