debian e portatile: mouse esterno

Salve a tutti.
Proprio ieri ho installato sul mio portatile, un Compaq 920EA, debian sarge dalla netinst.
L'ho correttamente installata, ho fatto il dist-upgrade a sid, ho installato xfree86, poi gdm e poi xfce 4.2.
Dopo aver dovuto smanettare un po' in XF86Config-4 per il monitor, ora ho un sistema che pare funzionante.

Ho un solo problema. per tutto il tempo dell'installazione e ora è sempre rimasto attaccato un mouse esterno ps/2, che, però, tutt'ora debian non vede.
Ovvero, per dirla diversamente, funziona solo il touchpad, che peraltro viaggia con il driver "mouse", perchè se metto "synaptics" (che ho installato tramite apt) non parte X e anche mentre lavoro da riga continua a visualizzare "touchpad lost sync at byte 1" e mi riempie intere pagine.

nonostante il mouse esterno non funzioni, però, in XF86Config ho due mouse configurati: uno che punta a /dev/psaux, che ho accertato essere il touchpad, ed un altro che punta a /dev/input/mice, entrambi con protocollo in auto.

Come posso fare?
Come posso configurare il due mouse in modo che funzionino contemporaneamente o, se proprio non si può, in modo che funzioni solo quello esterno?
