The 6x86MX will initially be offered in 150MHz, 166MHz, and 188MHz flavors.

Because the 6x86MX is architecturally more efficient that the Intel Pentium MMX and Pentium II processors, it has equivalent performance at a much lower internal clock speed. Lower megahertz speeds are an advantage, reducing power consumption and heat, making the chips more energy-efficient and more reliable. The 6x86MX has the lowest power consumption / performance ratio. This is a big change from the early days of 6x86 Classic.

Unfortunately we continue to have to live with the PR rating. Everyone should recognize the PR rating because it was carried over from the 6x86 Classic. Remember that PR stands for Performance Rating and not Pentium Rating. The folks at Intel are responsible for this change in meaning. They threatened Cyrix/IBM with legal action for naming their 6x86 processors Pxxx+. Intel thinks that they own the letter P and Cyrix/IBM responded by changing the name to PRxxx+."


in pratica con sto processore si è inventato il PR, infatti andava + dei pentium MMX, dei pentiumII e dei K6 di pari frequenza quindi con un clock minore aveva le stesse prestazioni
poi spiega anke i vantaggi
quindi la strada dell'ottimizzazione nn è stata imboccata x prima dagli amd

beh ottimizzazioni...
intel col pentium pro spinse la grande novità della cosiddetta "esecuzione dinamica" , anche detta "speculativa" (ovvero il riordino delle istruzioni in uno stadio apposti della pipeline) ...
il 6x86 prima e la versione mx (che aggiungeva il supporto alle istruzioni mmx) dopo erano insieme ai k6 delle cpu che si prefiggevano di fornire tale miglioria per il pubblico dotato di socket7, all' epoca la piattaforma mainstream
l' esecuzione out of order permette di non bloccare la cpu qualora sia in attesa di dati dalla memoria (operandi richiesti da un' istruzione) ma di continuare col flusso delle istruzioni: questo aumenta un po' l' efficienza e sulle normali applicazioni da ufficio si possono notare prestazioni superiori a quelle del pentium originale...
