Pioneer has demonstrated dual layer burning during the CES, the technology exhibition in Las Vegas. The company succeeded recording to two layers DVD-R in October 2003 and now firstly publicly demonstrated the technology. In the booth of the RWPPI (RW Products Promotion Initiative) they wrote 100 MB to each layer. The discs were read back by a normal DVD player.

Intresting however is that the company used a Pioneer A06 burner with only a modified firmware. According to the company only a firmware modification is needed in order to make a DVD-R drive write dual layer discs. The disc was written at 2 speed. The DVD-R dual layer specifications have not yet been passed by the DVD Forum.

Se fosse vera la notizia, ma dubito, i possessori del Pioneer A06 possono incominciare a far festa. Sarebbe proprio una bella sorpresa

una volta, aggiornando il firmware aumentavi la velocità di masterizzazzione, ora invece t sfornano un modello nuovo

Ora che anche il CES è terminato, questa notizia vi sollutticherà di certo il palato: stando a quanto riportato dal sito giapponese AVWatch, Pioneer ha fatto vedere una masterizzazione su DVD-R a doppio strato durante lo show. La parte migliore della notizia è che - apparentemente - per fare questo si sono serviti del ben noto masterizzatore A06, solo modificato con un firmware diverso! Finora era opinione comune che solamente i laser delle unità ad 8x avrebbero avuto la potenza necessaria per gestire la masterizzazione a doppio strato. Comunque sia, lo standard DVD-R a doppio strato non è stato ancora finalizzato e fino a quando questo avverrà, Pioneer di certo non si sbilancerà e non ci farà sapere se avremo un aggiornamento via software o se la gente sarà costretta a comprare un nuovo masterizzatore per poter scrivere sul doppio strato...
