"Alias|Wavefront's Maya Software is Awarded an Oscar for Technical Achievement by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences

Toronto, Canada - March 2, 2003 - Alias|Wavefront™, an SGI (NYSE: SGI) company, was awarded an Oscar at the Scientific and Technical Awards ceremony of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences on March 1, 2003 for its development of Maya® software, the professional 3D animation and effects package. Representatives from the Toronto-based software company attended the Beverley Hills award ceremony to accept the company's first Oscar statuette, the highest award the Academy can bestow in the scientific and technical achievement category. Doug Walker, president of Alias|Wavefront and Kevin Tureski, general manager, Maya engineering, accepted the award on behalf of the company from actress and host, Kate Hudson.

"It is with great honour that we accept this Oscar on behalf of the many innovative and talented individuals at Alias|Wavefront who have contributed to Maya," said Doug Walker. "It's been a milestone year for Maya. Our customers have taken Maya and used it to raise the creative bar in filmmaking, compelling us to push this science forward. Without our customers, this award would not be possible. With them, Maya has become the tool of choice for bringing 3D magic to the movies."

Maya is the world's leading 3D animation, modeling and rendering tool for the film, broadcast, video, game development, 3D web and location-based entertainment markets. Since its launch five years ago, Maya has been used in almost every film nominated by the Academy in its Visual Effects category.

Most recently, Maya was employed extensively in this year's Oscar-nominated films in the Visual Effects category: "Lord of the Rings™: The Two Towers™," "Spider-Man®," and "Star Wars Episode II: Attack Of The Clones®." Maya was also an integral part of the production pipelines for the nominees for best animated short: The ChubbChubbs!™ and Mike's New Car and four of the five best animated feature film nominees: Ice Age™, Lilo & Stitch, Treasure Planet™ and Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron™.

The Oscar is the highest award the Academy can bestow, and is the same statuette that is presented during the main awards ceremony. Since 1930, only 40 Scientific and Technical achievements have been recognized with this level of award.

Ma volevo sapere una cosa. Strumenti tipo Artisan, la possibilità di creare texture dipingendo direttamente sul modello 3d, il Blend shape per l'animazione facciale e le subdivision surface (so che queste sono presenti in softimage...) esistono, magari in maniera similare, anche negli altri software? Oppure è Maya ad essere troppo avanti?
